Justin Warfield - My Field Trip To Planet 9

No one will be angry if you missed out on Justin Warfield, mostly because it's his own fault. This guy confuses the crap out of me and it doesn't seem to be a pre-conceived business strategy. He showed up in the early nineties working with Quincy Jones' son, Q.D.III, and doing work with a ton of British elctro folks like the Chemical Brothers and Bomb The Bass. He recorded a hip-hop album with Prince Paul and Q.D.III, then recorded a throwback rock album in the vein of Lenny Kravitz, then he joined a crew named One Inch Punch that made some high-profile appearances on things like the Romeo & Juliet soundtrack and then he disappeared for a while. Now he's a member of the goth-electro crew She Wants Revenge who I am not feeling. I wish he'd go back to rapping but I'm sure he has other interests and/or reasons. It might have something to do with all that acid he keeps talking about having dropped.

Regardless of his messy career, his hip-hop stuff and the tracks he did with the Chems and Bomb The Bass are classics, although not many people are familiar with his solo album, My Field Trip To Planet 9. It came out in 93 on Qwest Records, Quincy Jones' label which was distributed by Warners. Justin was involved in the production from beginning to end and worked, as I mentioned earlier, with Prince Paul and Q.D.III on several tracks. For whatever reason though the album didn't go much of anywhere and Justin abandoned a lot of his hip-hop career soon afterwards. As I mentioned earlier, this may have been related to his purported drug use at the time, which most likely negatively influenced the album's promotion or lack thereof. It's one thing to brag about smoking weed, but dropping acid and doing psychedelic hip-hop in the early nineties was just not generally accepted (Like it ever did?). Anyways, he still did raps on guest spots but it became far more infrequent and Justin disappeared pretty quickly.

Planet 9 is still available for purchase via iTunes and such, but good look finding a physical copy. I had one but it got trashed pretty bad and I don't have a clue how it happened. I'm pretty anal about my collection and I don't leave discs just lying around, so when layers of paint started chipping off the face of the CD and I could see through it, I knew it was over. So enjoy this download and, if you dig it, go buy the album as a download. I'd say support his current works, but I just can't feel the She Wants Revenge stuff.

Oh, by the way, this post ties in slightly with the Trademark Of Quality post(s) as a version of Dip Dip Divin' appears on the 1993 edition. It's simply listed as the New Version and, from the short sample I've heard, appears to be a metal remix of sorts. I prefer the regular version of the track but I still look forward to checking out that remix and I will post it for all to hear upon receiving it.
