Europeans in Detroit

Interesting to see a couple of re-badged European cars on display at the 2010 Detroit show earlier this month.

Following its takeover by Fiat, Chrysler clearly couldn’t be bothered to do too much with the Lancia Delta, not even going to the trouble of changing its model name. A minor tweak to the grille seemed to be enough.

The Chrysler Delta.  Or is it?

Buick meanwhile appeared to make a bit more of an effort with the Regal, its version of the Vauxhall / Opel Insignia. The GS shown featured a 252 bhp four cylinder turbo engine. Not quite the 321 bhp that the six cylinder Insignia VXR / OPC has, but it should still be rather quick, with a 0 - 60 mph time below six seconds.

Punto loses its looks

Undoubtedly one of the best features of the Fiat Grande Punto was its styling, which even earned comparison to the design of the Maserati 3200 GT, around the nose at least. Hardly surprising considering that Italdesign was involved in both cars.

So who knows what Fiat was thinking when it signed off the Grande Punto’s successor, the Punto Evo? Being kind, it’s definitely a striking facelift. Being unkind, perhaps they should have left the bandages on. Maybe it’ll look better in the flesh, but the combination of that great chrome strip with the heavy bumper / grille arrangement at the front really isn’t very photogenic.

Not all bad news though - one of the highlights of the Punto Evo has to be the new MultiAir petrol engines that manage to increase power and torque, whilst reducing fuel consumption and emissions. This is achieved by a clever new electro-hydraulic method of controlling the inlet and outlet valves.

It means that the most powerful petrol engine, the 1.4 16v turbo, produces 135 bhp yet will do just over 50 mpg (5.6 l/100km) on the combined cycle (according to Fiat) with carbon dioxide levels of 129 g/km.

By comparison its predecessor, the Grande Punto with the 1.4 T-Jet engine, could generate only 120 bhp, failed to better 43 mpg (6.6 l/100 km) and had emissions of 155 g/km.

Rip Torn Arrested For Bank Robbery

Funny man Rip Torn, 78, was arrested for breaking into a Connecticut bank on Friday night.

According to police reports, the actor/comedian was found inside the Litchfield Bancorp building, clearly intoxicated and waving a loaded revolver.

Torn, who appeared on 30 Rock, Men In Black, Bee Movie, and a host of other comedies, was arrested and held on $100,000 bond.

Cops say Torn was charged with carrying a pistol without a permit, carrying a firearm while intoxicated, first-degree burglary, first-degree criminal trespass and third-degree criminal mischief.

He has two previous DUI arrests, is on probation in Connecticut, and has attended numerous court ordered alcohol education programs.

Torn's real name is Elmore Rual Torn, Jr, and was currently in production on "Cat Tales" due in theaters later in 2010.

The animated comedy has Torn lending his voice to Sampson, in this story of a cat named Rover, who has been raised as a dog in Dogtown, by accident. Rover travels to Catopolis to find where he really came from and find his roots.

Liz Phair - whitechocolatespaceegg: original version

If you didn't read my previous post on Liz Phair and her Girly-Sound demos, then let me reiterate my adoration for Liz and her work throughout her career. Yes, she hasn't been as consistent in recent years, but there are reasons and such things couldn't shake my respect for her. That said, her third full length, whitechocolatespaceegg, is a difficult piece to tie down. It's not nearly as in-your-face as her previous albums and deals more with familial issues. It's worth noting that at the time of it's creation and release she had recently given birth to her first child and was in the process of a divorce for which she acknowledged fault as she'd had an affair, all of which made the album sound more mature and clearly scared her then label, Capitol Records. The infamous story is that Gary Gersh, then Capitol's president, stated that the initial version of the album was "music for housewives" and demanded she continue working on the album.

To add injury to insult, the label she was initially signed to through Capitol, Matador Records, was in the midst of a messy end-of-contract negotiation with Capitol and, to achieve their release, signed Liz's contract over which released all other Matador artists from the original agreement and bound Liz to Capitol. Of the matter, in 2003 Liz said in an interview,

Matador sold themselves, me included. This is how it really works: Matador is an indie and they sold themselves twice to major labels, and I went along with them whether I liked it or not. Then Capitol, under Gary Gersh, dropped Matador. For Matador to get out of their deal, they sold me to Capitol, [and Capitol] kept me. It's really fucked up when you put it that way. I haven't had any safe zone where I was working for over a decade. It all worked out okay, but it took a long time.

Altogether, that is probably the nicest way you could put it, and you can read that whole interview here if you'd like, it's pretty damn good.

Oh yeah, long-time friend Jim Ellison of Material Issue committed suicide in 1996, which couldn't have made anything easier. Sometimes, when it rains it truly pours.

In the end, Liz earned too much shit and far too few sales in regards to whitechocolatespaceegg, and that's a bloody shame. It's different to be certain, but it's still a great album with great songs and that's what really matters. With that said, fans of Liz have been trading demos and studio sessions for the album for quite some time, leading to two bootleg comps of unreleased material, the first focusing on thirty tracks of varying quality, many actually repeating themselves, and the second consisting of tapes found left by Jason Chasko who had worked on the album, which featured alternate mixes, rough mixes, non-album tracks and the complete original album to boot! Man, that's a lot of Liz! As cool as all these recordings are, the core, for me at least, is the original version of the album, and that's what I'm featuring here today. That's not to say I won't post the other stuff, and I plan to do so eventually, but the album comes first.

For the record, several of the tracks here are the same as the versions that saw release on the official issue of whitechocolatespaceegg, though they're almost all different mixes, so don't be surprised if they sound similar. Enjoy!

NOTE: Okay, I'm gonna give it another shot. This time, I made a new rar from the contents of the original and also uploaded track four on it's own. It's highlighted in the tracklist so you can grab it without having to re-download the whole album. There is still a recovery archive included in the rar but I guess it doesn't help much if you're on a mac. I'll have to look into better solutions for problems like these, but the only one that comes to mind is uploading each file individually, and I've never wanted to do that. Anyway, I'll let everyone know when I know more. For now, let me know if there are any more problems. Oh, and one more thing, just in case the new upload of the full album doesn't work right, I left the initial re-up active here so grab it if necessary. Enjoy!

Jackson Kids To Sing At Grammy's?

There is a rumor starting to circulate that Michael Jackson's kids may make not only an appearance, but perform at this weekend Grammy Awards.

Things started to heat up when American Idol's Ryan Seacrest posted to his Twitter page that MJ's kids may participate.

Seacrest said on Wednesday:

"Just talked to the executive producer of the Grammys... hearing MJ's kids may sing."

Were pretty sure he would not have said anything unless there was at least a remote chance the children would appear.

There have been rumors before about the kids making an album and/or appearing on a Jackson Family bio or televised special.

More as news comes our way…

Christian Marclay - More Encores

More Encores is a great starting point for Mr. Marclay's works, with him limiting his selections to one specific artist for each track, although that doesn't really limit someone like Mr. Marclay as what he does with the source material makes it into something brand new.

More Encores was initially released in 1989 on German label No Man's Land as a 10" record. It was reissued in 1997 on ReR Megacorp on CD and again on 10" vinyl. The liner notes are presented below.

Each piece is composed entirely of records by the artist after whom it is titled. John Cage is a recording of a collage made by cutting slices from several records and gluing them back into a single disc. In all other pieces the records were mixed and manipulated on multiple turntables and recorded analog with the use of overdubbing. A hand-crank gramophone was used in Louis Armstrong.

PLAY BACK AT HIGH VOLUME

Tracks A2, A6, B1, B4 recorded at Horvitz Studio, January 1987.
Tracks A1 and A3 recorded at King St. Studio, July 1987.
Track A4 recorded at Noise NY, August 1987.

Special thanks to everyone who made this record possible, to the composers and performers who's records were abused, and to Sokhi Wagner, Anne Garland, Jim Hinchee, Robin Holcomb, Mark Derry, Susan Tallman.

As this isn't a review, I'm not going to bore you with hyperbole about my feelings for each track, but the Zorn and Strauss tracks are easy favorites and the Cage track is incredible! The Dust Brothers: OVERDOSE!

Not a real overdose of course, but I figured I might as well hit you with all of this in one shot as there is a lot here and I don't want to drag this out over a week.

I feel kinda bad for the Dust Brothers as they are clearly great producers but seem to get hired for lots of odd stuff that doesn't really utilize their abilities. There are a lot of their remixes that never really blew my mind but it seems like some of them were simply quick jobs for labels they may have been contractually obligated to produce. I can't wrong them for making money and their productions are always quality, it's just they seem occasionally rushed and don't get to feature a lot of their creativity. On the other hand, the labels may limit their work by not allowing them to use excessive samples or stray from certain defined genres. Whatever the reason, it's a shame because when they're hot, they're simply amazing! With that, I'm posting a collection of their remixes and productions as well as three rare albums they produced. A little information on each one will be provided below.

The Dust Brothers - Productions, Remixes & Other Things
NOTES: Some of these tracks appear in my previous Dust Brothers related post entitled dusted. Sorry for the repetition, but I like those tracks so much and think they're of such high quality that I couldn't help but re-post them. Also, the quality is low on this one (128kbps) so it would be an easy download, hope that doesn't disappoint anyone. One more thing, if anyone is wondering why tracks like the Offspring, Technotronic and other various remixes aren't included here, I either didn't think they were that hot or there simply wasn't enough space. I know, I know, what makes me qualified to judge? It's my site after all, isn't it? That said, if enough people want to hear the other stuff, let me know and I'll do another post with more remixes and such.

NOTE 2: This has been reuploaded in hope that it repairs problems with the previous version. Please let me know if anyone has any problems opening this version.

01 Mellow Man Ace - Hip Hop Creature

02 Machines Of Loving Grace - Richest Junkie Still Alive (Cherry Valley Mix)

03 Eels - Susan's Apartment (Mike Simpson Remix)
As the title implies, this remix is the sole work of EZ Mike. Also, it's actually a remix of the Eels' track Susan's House from their debut album, Beautiful Freak.

04 White Zombie - Grease Paint and Monkey Brains (Sin Centers Of Suburbia Mix)

05 Searchin'
A Dust Brothers instrumental contributed to Mo'Wax's Headz 2 compilations.

06 Def Jef - God Made Me Funky
The Dust Brothers actually contributed four tracks to Def Jef's Just A Poet With Soul album. This is my favorite.

07 Money Mark - Cry (Dust Brothers Remix)
This is a really great remix. Just sayin'.

08 The Folk Implosion - Insinuation (Dust Brothers Remix)

09 Nitzer Ebb - Fun To Be Had (Dust Mix)

10 Hanson - Mmm Bop (Radio Version)
If you're not familiar with this one, I want to know what year you were born! But seriously, I know this one is super-ubiquitous, but it's a great track and kind of important to the whole run-down of their productions.

11 Filter - Hey Man Nice Shot (Nickel Bag)

12 Smash Mouth - Virgin Girl (feat. Chopper)
Ooh, how I LOVE to mock Smash Mouth! Their first album was pretty good and their second wasn't too shabby, but it's not like anyone should expect anything earth shattering from these guys. That said, this is a really funky reggae-esque track from the Half Baked soundtrack which is, as you'd expect, all about getting stoned. I guess if you want records about getting stoned, you contact people with a name like the Dust Brothers. I'd say to contact Tricky too, but the producers of that soundtrack did, so they clearly knew their musical demographic.

13 They Might Be Giants - Snail Dust (Dust Brothers Remix)
Dust Brothers remix of Snail Shell.

14 Fluke - Bullet (Afro Funk Remix)

15 Squirrel Nut Zippers - Suits Are Picking Up The Bill (Dust Brothers Remix)
Another favorite of mine, this is a simple enough remix but it's a ton of fun.

16 The Chemical Brothers - Elektrobank (Dust Brothers Remix)
Chemicals vs. Dust! Short but sweet remix for which the favor was later returned when the Chems remixed a Dust track for the Dead Man On Campus soundtrack. As good as that track, named Realize, is, I'd really like to hear the original version, but it remains unreleased.

17 The Groomsman
Another Dust instrumental from the Headz 2 compilations.

18 Creeper Lagoon - Empty Ships
King Gizmo aka John King gets the production credit on this track. This and the album it's taken from was released on the Dust Brothers then label, Ideal Records, which was distributed via Mammoth. Sadly, it's out of print, which may give merit to a post eventually. It's worth it for more than the Dust Brothers connection.

19 The X-Files Theme
Not bad, but certainly nothing incredible, this was recorded for the soundtrack to the X-Files: Fight The Future movie. I don't think it was actually in the film though, although I don't believe much of anything on the soundtrack was. That's the worst type of soundtrack, but it was the mid-nineties and there was a lot of that going on.

20 Wesley Willis - The Dust Brothers
The Dust Brothers actually received the production credit for this, which even they acknowledged was kind of ridiculous, although Wesley's people insisted on it since they engineered the sessions at their PCP Labs studio. For more info on Wesley, check here.

And on to the albums! First up is Vince Neil's second solo outing, the Carved In Stone album. I haven't found much about this one online but I assume by it's non-availability that it bombed. That said, the production is top notch and the Brothers sound totally into it, although the songwriting, mostly courtesy of Neil and Marti Fredrickson, is a bit lacking.

The Dust Brothers got production credit on all tracks but one, Skylar's Song, which I believe is a tribute to one of Neil's children. There were also two bonus tracks released in Europe and Japan which aren't featured here that are assumed to be Dust Brothers productions as well.

Vince Neil - Carved In Stone

Next up is Sugartooth's The Sounds Of Solid, and this one is kinda painful to listen to. Sugartooth is probably best remembered for their song Sold My Fortune which was featured in an episode of Beavis and Butthead where they assumed the song was named Sold My Futon. That song sounded a lot better there than it did in my car stereo, so I kinda wrote them off rather quickly, but they released this follow-up in 1997. Apparently, their drummer left the band (I believe it was the excellent Joey Castillo, who has since played with Queens Of The Stone Age) and, rather than hire a new one, they decided to hire producers who knew their way around drum machines and samplers. Having just produced Beck's Odelay which was also released on DGC/Geffen, it probably made a ton of sense to get them on board, and the production is indeed excellent, but the songs are practically non-existent, kind of like Silverchair but even more boring. There is only so much the producer can do in a situation like this, and the Dust Brothers clearly did everything they could, but if the songwriting is weak it simply can't be salvaged, and at around a half-hour there wasn't much to begin with.

Sugartooth - The Sounds Of Solid

Last up is Buggin' Out by 10¢, a full-on Dust production on their own short-lived Hi-Ho/Ideal labels. This one has an oddball charm to it, being rather short at around a half-hour and kinda childish, but it's still a lot of fun. I can't promise that everyone will enjoy this, but at least half the album is truly winning and charming with the other half being subliminal growers. This one is really worth your time as it's truly a diamond in the rough. I don't know anything about what happened to 10¢ since but I know they had at least one other release prior to this with no Dust influence. This is also still available for purchase digitally via iTunes and Amazon, and while I don't normally post things that are still available, I'd feel bad for anyone paying ten dollars for an album this short if they didn't know what they were getting themselves into, so if you enjoy this please buy a download, as I'm sure the folks from 10¢ would appreciate it.

kind: The Killer Instinct Never Dies!

So I've mentioned kind here on a few different occasions but haven't gone into great detail. They're a five-piece band from the Akron, Ohio area and sound something like Neil Young & Crazy Horse meeting Sonic Youth with an industrial drummer crushing everything in it's path. In other words, SIMPLY AWESOME!

The first things some people point out about the band is that three of its members were in Dink, an industrial/dance/rock band also formed in the Kent/Akron area in the nineties who grabbed fame with their hit single, Green Mind, and their self-titled debut. They also point out the similarity between band names, kind vs. Dink. Next, many assume there must be a further connection between the bands, as if kind was the logical progression from Dink. They would be wrong though, as the D word is rarely spoken by members of the band and their sound couldn't be further from that of Dink. Gone is the electronic/industrial sheen, replaced by vocalist/guitarist Teresa F. Bosko's hauntingly poetic voice and songs, as she is the primary songwriter. Sean Carlin, on guitar and occasional vocals, brings the noise with Steve Gang, also on guitar and vocals, going off like Pee Wee Herman possessed, all the while backed by Jeff Finn holding it down on bass and Ed VanDerKuil destroying everything in his path via his drum kit.

After hanging with the band at a rehearsal and recording session, I was asked if I wanted to come see the band play live. They didn't need to ask twice, but I couldn't get to their first official show in 2009, so this past Saturday I went down to Akron's Musica for a night of rock. They were joined by opener Collideascope and co-headliner, Full Wave Rectifier, which features ex-Dink vocalist, Jer Herring.

Not to be cruel, but Collideascope were weak. Not much in the way of melodies or changes was displayed by the group, although they had a full-blown merchandise table they didn't even use. On the other hand though, Full Wave Rectifier kicked ass! You can find more about them at their myspace site and I'm definitely grabbing some of their releases very soon. They even went so far as to perform an awesome rendition of Dink's Green Mind with Bob Serpentini samples to boot! Full Wave Rectifier are probably easiest to describe as indie, but their sound is full of pop and punk influences.

kind took the stage around eleven and shook the house with their Cowboy Song, which starts off slow moving to an eventual whiplash pace. I recognized most of the songs from previous hearings, but they seemed to take on a new energy with Ed's percussion being so tight and the band sounding purely on fire. Teresa's vocals are almost like a conversation, as if she's telling you what she's seen and you're her confidant. Her voice reminds me of Tori Amos, not saying that Teresa sounds like Tori though, but rather that she exudes a power and confidence which strikes you without the need to scream or yell, although she sounds just as mighty when she does get loud. For instance, during In The Passing Lane With Neil Young, she sings about what sounds like the final days during the end of the world as we or at least someone knows it. She never forces it down your throat, rather she quietly grabs your attention as the band creates a storm of a performance, though no matter how loud they are you're always focused on what she has to say, and she sounds so sure of every word.

Teresa doesn't completely handle the vocal duties, as Steve takes the mic on three songs. His vocals remind me of Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh on overdrive, or as I mentioned earlier, a darker, crazier Pee Wee Herman. During the Dog/God song he went buckwild about nuns and religion, and Creepy Crawly is like a psycho take on the Velvet Underground's Waiting For My Man. Apart from Steve's jump to front and center, the only other vocals were provided by Sean on the sole holdover from the Dink days, The Heroin Song, now a stompingly angry love/sex letter with a needle in it's vein. The band finished off with Your Favorite Song, featuring a furious vocal from Teresa letting everyone know they shouldn't mistake kind's music for anyone else, although I don't know if anyone could mistake their sound for another band. That's a compliment by the way!

Right now, the only sampling I can provide you of kind's sound is what they have on their myspace page. Sean let me know that these are rough mixes and that more complete mixes have been made since, they just haven't been uploaded yet. Hopefully, if they don't put them on the myspace page, they will be available elsewhere, maybe even here, but for now you should check these versions out ASAP! And if you're liking what you're hearing, drop them a line and let them know, they will appreciate it. Better yet, see them live next time!
