Pontiac Trans Am reborn

OK, not officially, but Lingenfelter Performance Engineering of Indiana has created what it thinks a modern Trans Am might have looked like had General Motors not pulled the plug on the Pontiac brand.

Called the Lingenfelter TA, the car is based on the current Chevrolet Camaro SS and takes the 1971 Trans Am as its design inspiration.

Not many of the Camaro’s panels survive the transformation intact. The front end is completely replaced, as are the rear quarter panels and all of the lights. Finishing off the exterior are 20" wheels, Nitto tyres and a Corsa exhaust system. Meanwhile, the interior is very 70s retro, and it features custom seats, centre console, door panels, carpets and a turned metal instrument panel.

Engine capacity has been increased from 6.2 litres (376 cu in) 7.5 litres (455 cu in) and, with modifications including a ported and polished cylinder head, forged aluminium pistons and a new inlet manifold, it now produces 655 bhp (488 kW / 664 PS) and 827 Nm (610 lb ft) of torque. Drive is via a six-speed manual transmission.

Cost of the V8 SS-based Lingenfelter TA is around $150,000 (about £98,000 / €118,000), including the donor car. However, if a V6 Camaro is used instead the price falls to around $85,000 (£55,000 / €67,000).

Mitsubishi i-MiEV costs

The economics of running an electric Mitsubishi i-MiEV are being questioned, incredibly, by Mitsubishi itself.

In figures that were provided to the BBC, the manufacturer seems to be warning anyone considering buying an i-MiEV that a normal petrol-powered car, such as the Fiat 500 Lounge 1.2, could actually be cheaper to own. That’s because the i-MiEV’s lower fuel and servicing costs might fail to offset the biggest cost factor: depreciation.

In fact, according to Mitsubishi, the i-MiEV only becomes a better value proposition when the expense of the London Congestion Charge is taken into account. However, with cars that emit 100 g/km or less of CO2 not having to pay the charge if changes currently under discussion are approved, the i-MiEV (and in fairness other electric cars such as the Nissan Leaf) become an expensive method to achieve free driving in London. And, of course, that is all totally irrelevant if you never drive in London.

Perhaps the point is that the depreciation characteristics of electric cars are a huge unknown. In preparing its numbers, Mitsubishi has just assumed that their car will be worth 49% of its list price after three years, the same as the Fiat 500.

It could easily be 59%, or 39%, or any other number - nobody knows. What potential customers need to consider though is that the i-MiEV and Leaf are first generation electric cars. The technology used is still in its infancy, and it can be guaranteed that the biggest issues - battery cost, life and range - will all be overcome in the coming years.

That could end up making first generation electric cars obsolete, in much the same way that the very first mobile phones are now viewed as antiques. If so, the result will be pitiful residual values.

Either Mitsubishi is being extremely honest, or it has just committed a huge public relations faux pas.

Robert Fripp - God Save The Queen / Under Heavy Manners

Oh how I am tired. Ever woken up at one in the morning to find you might be suffering from a potentially severe sleep disorder that causes you to scream out for no logically clear reason about things that make no sense? Didn't sleep well after that, although the fact I couldn't NOT sleep means I'm not suffering from insomnia which I suppose is a good thing. Anyway, the funny part is I was listening to this very record while falling asleep which leads me to wonder if it might have affected my state. I suppose one shouldn't listen to things which might affect them but this is some good shit! Maybe I need Breathe Right strips or something.

Anyway, in the recent Bowie post I mentioned my lack of knowledge regarding Fripp and Belew and requested some guidance. I want to thank everyone who wrote me which includes Roger Camden, Stanley, Anonymous (beefheartfan) and Nathan Moore (I'll be responding to you soon Nathan!), for your advice which has been quite helpful. I've found that the King Crimson stuff really isn't my thing as it just doesn't add up for me, but Fripp's work with Eno, his productions for Daryl Hall and Peter Gabriel, his group the League Of Gentlemen and his solo records are all pretty incredible! (No Pussyfooting) kinda drags but the music is so beautiful and Fripp's later pieces with Eno are amazing. Fripp's supposed AOR trio of albums are rather good if not totally off the wall, with Peter Gabriel's PG 2 ("Scratch") probably being the most sensible of the three, Hall's falling somewhere between his work with Oates and Fripp's Zen Garden vibes, and Fripp's Exposure being totally insane to the point I have no idea how it could have been labeled AOR by anyone. Exposure is incredible though, and from there I listed to the League Of Gentlemen album which is excellent and very much of it's early eighties dance/punk era. But that's when I finally heard some solo Frippertronics recordings and fell madly in love with God Save The Queen / Under Heavy Manners, one of the only albums Fripp has not reissued since it's original release.

I haven't gotten to do much research as to why GSTQ/UHM remains unavailable, but I suppose it has something to do with Under Heavy Manners, the song, also appearing on the League Of Gentlemen album and a reworked version of The Zero Of The Signified, the album's closer, also appearing on the League album as God Save The King. It's a shame though that the Frippertronics pieces haven't been reissued as they are stunningly beautiful. I've read commentary from other listeners that many see those pieces as repetitive and boring, but for myself they were just the opposite. Relaxing, beautiful, stretching out as far as they need to, it's the type of thing Eno would be proud of. And the non-Frippertronics tracks, labeled by Fripp as Discotronics for featuring bass and percussion augmenting his guitar loops, I've also seen get bashed for supposedly not changing very often, but The Zero has all kinds of little subtle shifts before the rhythm drops out leaving only Fripp's loops, and David Byrne's vocal appearance on Manners, odd and more disjointed than usual with all the lyrics written by Fripp, is stunning. Maybe Fripp thought this album, which is clearly meant to be taken as two separate sets of recordings, was damaged by this split, but I thoroughly disagree.

After having found some low bitrate MP3s of this album, a friend on a private site (who wishes to remain anonymous) hooked me up with a beautiful lossless rip that sounds so clear it's almost not believable that it's a vinyl transfer. He also gave me the artwork and liner notes for the album which are very informative, and I decided to share these all back with you, my beloved readers! So, please enjoy this ridiculously clean rip of the God/Manners album and I hope you are just as enchanted as I am. Now I'm going to do some research about sleep disorders in my family tree.

UPDATE: Sorry guys, but Fripp's lawyers are becoming mighty feisty regarding his solo material. With that said, I'm not going to be posting any Fripp for a while, but I may post this again down the road as part of something special. Keep an eye peeled!

Bringing the dead back to life

Many people have extinct animals tattooed in their bodies but not everyone notice it. Some people think extinct animals are strictly dinos and never realize there's more to it than a reptile. Here are some examples of those who are no longer with us.

No Age - Glitter

Summer is winding down even though the weather is still pretty nice. All in all, there has been a lot of cool stuff so far this year and I'm finally getting back into the groove after keeping things a little slower than usual this August. With that said, I'll get back to a more regular habit of posting in September. August isn't done yet though, and I will do that small Fripp post Monday or Tuesday. Today though...

I went out to my boss's house to help with a tech thing only to return home two or three hours later and find that a DVD screener of a movie I wanted to see leaked in that time and another one the night before (of course my two favorite movies from this summer haven't leaked yet though. Why can't I get DVD screeners of Scott Pilgrim and Inception? C'mon! I promise not to share them! SERIOUSLY!!!), but the new No Age album, Everything In Between, also leaked! There are a few albums on my want list that I am eagerly awaiting but the No Age album has been at the top of that list since it was announced a few months ago. Now, if you've been reading my site for a while I'm sure you know that I don't share albums that have an impending release and I don't want to see money taken from folks who put their hearts into what they do, so while I downloaded the album I'm not gonna share it and I'm going to pick it up upon it's release. If you download it and like it I hope you do the same, but even though No Age are becoming quite the popular band in some circles, I realize that not everyone is familiar with them so I wanted to share a little info about them and give you an idea what they sound like.

No Age are the duo of Randy Randall and Dean Allen Spunt. They were initially part of the hardcore punk group Wives, but after that group dissolved they decided to continue on as a duo with in different direction. It's probably easiest to describe No Age's sound as dreamy, shoegazer punk with a joyous edge to it. They use noisy guitar loops for texture and trade off on instruments regularly making for a great live show. Lyrically they're more stream of consciousness than anything really deep, but those lyrics and vocals are like another instrument, further adding to the texture of the band's sound. I'm being lazy saying this, but the first thing I think of is a punk version of My Bloody Valentine's Loveless. I feel like a hack saying that, but that doesn't make the description inaccurate.

For me, if I was 18 or 19, going to college and djing at a college radio station, I would be playing this all the time. No Age is not an overtly commercial band, no matter how catchy some of their songs may be, and I don't ever expect to hear them on popular radio, but that's popular radio's loss. Their new record and it's first single, Glitter, sound a little more polished, but that doesn't hurt anything and they don't sound like anyone else out right now.

I'm not going to continue rattling on endlessly about how great I think No Age are, rather I'm going to give you some evidence so you can make up your own mind. Below you'll find a stream from Sub Pop's SoundCloud page for Glitter, and here are links for Amazon and iTunes where you can purchase that single and hear samples of it's b-sides. On top of that, if you get yourself over to No Age's page at RCRD LBL you can download Glitter and three other songs there for free! How about them apples?

If you're feeling No Age, their new album, Everything In Between, will be released on September 28th, but you can also get the excellent Nouns and Weirdo Rippers now at your favorite indie record shop or digitally online. The CD issue of Nouns is particularly nice with a booklet filled with photos and artwork of the band on tour, doing art things and such. If you like these guys, please support them by buying their album, going to one of their shows or grabbing a t-shirt. They're a true indie duo and I know they'd love your support. Hope you enjoy!

Lotus Evora S announced

The Europa may have been quietly dropped from the range, and the Elise / Exige line-up is facing an uncertain future in Europe due to emissions legislation, but Lotus is promising some important unveilings at September’s Paris Motor Show.

However, perhaps feeling that the wait might be too much for some, the company has decided to reveal a couple of its new products ahead of the show.

The first is the Evora S, which takes the standard Evora’s 3.5 litre V6 and adds a supercharger. As a result, power output leaps from 276 bhp (206 kW / 280 PS) to 345 bhp (257 kW / 350 PS), a significant 25% increase.

With torque also rising from 350 Nm to 400 Nm, it’s no surprise that performance is improved: 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in the S takes 4.8 seconds, while its top speed is 172 mph (276 km/h). By comparison, the normally aspirated Evora manages 5.1 seconds and 162 mph (261 km/h).

But the extra power is just one element of what makes the Evora S different. The suspension settings have also been fine tuned, there are cross-drilled brakes and a ‘sport’ button comes fitted as standard. Pressing this raises the rev limit, changes the dynamic stability control settings, improves throttle response and activates an exhaust by-pass valve. Visually, the S is distinguished by a larger rear diffuser.

No word on prices for the Evora S yet but, with the standard 2+2 costing £49,995 in the UK, expect a premium for the quicker version of around £8,000 - £10,000?

The second announcement is the arrival of an automatic gearbox option for the 276 bhp Evora. Called Intelligent Precision Shift (IPS for short), the six-speed transmission has been introduced to ‘broaden the appeal of the Evora and reach out to a slightly different market’ according to Dany Bahar, Lotus Chief Executive Officer. That means Lotus is hunting sales in the Middle East, Asian and North American territories, where many drivers either struggle to change gears manually or simply can’t be bothered.

IPS allows the driver to switch between manual paddle shift and automatic drive modes, although performance suffers thanks to the auto ’box and a slight weight increase from 1,382 kg to 1,436 kg. Acceleration to 62 mph will take 5.5 seconds, and top speed drops to 155 mph (250 km/h). Again, pricing for the IPS option is to be confirmed.

Excellence

This is the type of tattoo that the person wearing it proudly displays. The detail, style and artistry of its creator can be well appreciated.

Girly sleeves, why not?

In our society there is a group of people with a lack of knowledge about the Tattooed Community and they simply can't picture in their minds anything related to tattoos and have a misconception (perhaps they're just intimidated by the aggressiveness) of tattoo enthusiasts and still in 2010 I believe those kind of people have a limited brain when it comes to anything outside the environment they're used to or they simply want people to live.

I've heard people say tattoo don't look good on girls or girls with sleeves don't look feminine at all. It really make me ask myself "what the hell they're thinking?". That proves how full of shit those people are and how ignorant certain group of people can be. I believe they should do some research before they open their mouth and if they don't feel like digging into it to learn one thing or two then they should close their trap.

This were some examples of ladies with sleeves and yes they do look sexy. What make them different from the typical, boring, ass showing ladies is the art in their bodies which also allow people to be more creative at the time of the photo shoot. This ladies here show Ink and skin, the others just show ass OR simply promote what they sell. If anyone think this girly tattoos looks manly then let's see a man wearing the same tattoo in their bodies.
