With Demonoid still being down and my inability to trust The Pirate Bay, I've had numerous reasons not to post the newest version of The Paul's Boutique Companion online, but I took a little time and found an alternative that I think everyone will be satisfied with. Just follow the link, download the file and go from there. I'm sure you'll find it pretty self-explanatory. I'm leaving this post short because I honestly feel the content says it all. If you have questions though, please leave them in the comments or send me an e-mail. Enjoy!

UPDATE: Please download this updated link. Sorry if you got the old one and are wondering why it's stopped working. There was an odd problem, but this will resolve it.

The Shining OST

Everyone who knows me knows I don't care for sports. That's not to say I'm against sports, they've simply never been a major interest of mine. That said, Thanksgiving is one of those days where sports are unavoidable with every family unit I've participated in, and the only options are suffering through them or entering a tryptophan-induced coma. I chose the coma, but I woke in time to speak with my relatives about each others' lives. I spent a lot of time talking with my future cousin-in-law about audio recording techniques, a topic I can keep up with him just fine on, and video production as well as photography, fields I appreciate greatly but he is light years ahead of me on. Luckily, we got back to common ground when he mentioned having been to recent screenings of Dr. Strangelove and The Shining at his college, and in full theatrical presentation no less! We started fawning over Kubrick's works immediately only to have another future cousin-in-law note she had never seen The Shining. Minutes later, my future father-in-law (lot of future in-laws at Thanksgiving this year!) cued up a wonderful hi-def and widescreen (!) cut of the film from the DVR on his ridiculously high-end television and we all followed that opening shot of the little yellow bug on it's trip through the mountains. How's that for Thanksgiving Day proceedings?

One comment everyone I know makes about The Shining is how creepy the music throughout it is. It truly builds the mood of the film and, like Kubrick's 2001, features a substantial amount of pre-existing selections as opposed to a completely new score, although a new score was recorded for The Shining and parts of it do feature throughout the film. Credit for that score goes to Wendy Carlos and Rachel Elkind, and they know exactly how to scare the bejeezus out of the viewer. Their contributions, along with the rest of the film's score, are wonderfully haunting and a joy to absorb, but due to copyright issues the film's soundtrack has not been available since 1980. Thankfully, with all credit due to the endlessly resourceful device that is the internet (to be more specific, thank you coupler!), I was able to find a high quality rip of the soundtrack from a German pressing of the album and further indulged my want for that endlessly creepy vibe.

So, it is with great pleasure that I share the long-unavailable soundtrack for The Shining with you today. Again, this rip is taken from a German pressing of the vinyl and sounds mighty good, despite the obvious surface noise, but at near thirty years unavailable, beggars such as myself can't be choosers. This is my way of saying thanks, by sharing my enjoyment, and I hope you enjoy it too. Happy (belated) Thanksgiving!

Tiger Woods Seriously Hurt In Car Accident

Golfer Tiger Woods was seriously injured today in a car accident. Woods was alone in his car about 2:30 this morning driving near his home in Windermere Florida.

Last reports indicate he has already been released from the hospital after being treated for cuts on his face.

The golfer reportedly hit a fire hydrant and a tree on a neighbor's property less then one hundred feet from his own drive.

Police have not yet spoke to Tiger but alcohol was not being considered as a cause.

It is not yet known if the accident will affect his next appearance scheduled for December 3 in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Diamanda Galás with John Paul Jones - The Sporting Life

So I bought Them Crooked Vultures' debut album a few days before it came out and I've been playing it regularly ever since. Really good rockin' stuff, which Rom referred to as "FREEDOM ROCK, TURN IT UP!". I don't know if I'd consider it freedom rock, but Rom has a great sense of humor and knows his shit! Anyway, the album got me thinking about Led Zep, and how John Paul Jones was the silent hero of the group. Yeah, everyone remembers Jimmy Page and Robert Plant and John Bonham, but not many people talk about Mr. Jones (real name, by the way, is John Baldwin), so I decided to look up his work, which led me to this exquisite gem.

I'm not going to tell you I know a lot about Ms. Galás, but I've encountered her music in passing over the years and always found her intriguing, but this is the first time I ever listened to one of her albums from start to finish. She sounds like Sybil gone batshit looking to fuck and kill for passion and love, even if the love part isn't as obvious. GODDAMN SHE'S INCREDIBLE! And on The Sporting Life, Mr. Jones contributes most of the music and brings a stomp very reminiscent to the Zep.

This album came out in 1994, right around the time of Page and Plant's first reunion playing live on MTV with a full orchestra for their Unledded show. I remember enjoying that a lot, but wondering where the hell Jones was. I can't remember if it was Page or Plant, but one of them commented that it was easier to split millions in half than three ways. Their loss, because Mr. John Paul Jones bring the RAWK and Ms. Diamanda Galás brings the PAIN! I'm never going to tell you this is an easy album to listen to, but damn is it good! So, grab this, eat some turkey (happy turkey day everybody!) and when your family is watching football, get in your car and crank this shit loud! Let Ms. Galás make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up in terror, all the while you can't turn away! Let Mr. Jones bring that stone-solid rock to your speakers and let his bass paralyze you! And let Pete Thomas, taking care of percussion duties, fill the void left by John Bonham with power and grace! GET THIS AND LET IT WARP YOU!!!!!

PS - Please forgive my unprofessional tone and language throughout this post. It is Thanksgiving, referred by myself and my ilk as Turkey Day, and I am going to enjoy myself like I haven't gotten to for most of this year, so I'm feeling rather loose at the moment. Hopefully none of you are offended by the language. I'll return to my far more professional tone in the next post. For now though, HAPPY TURKEY DAY!!!!!

PS 2 - Click HERE and read about Ms. Galás and her works. She is definitely deserving of your attention! You can also click HERE to find more about Mr. Jones. He is deserving as well!

November 2009 Mixtape

The site is back in full swing, although as I noted earlier it can't be an everyday thing at the moment. More like a three or four days out of the week thing. BUT I'M ON IT! It's a busy time of year and it's hard to always have my mind on the site when it's not my full time job, but I'm sure everyone understands that. All said, I've got tons of content to post and I'm working on lining up interviews for the new year, so stay tuned! For today though, here is the November edition of the mixtape. Enjoy!

The Unheard Music November 2009 Mixtape

01 Portishead – Glory Box (Scorn)
I don’t think you could make Glory Box any gloomier than it is right here in this remix. God, what an incredible track! Doesn’t feel like light could ever penetrate this one’s darkness. Great way to start a mixtape that isn’t so dark, eh!?!?

02 The Strokes – You Only Live Once
I love Julian Casablancas’ new album, Phrazes For The Young, but I didn’t want to put a song from that on my site since there are so many other sites featuring tracks from it. This song is simply wonderful, but I’ve also included the demo later in the mixtape to show just how different Julian can flip it.

03 David Lee Roth – Just A Gigolo-I Ain’t Go Nobody (Medley)
Another example of having the ability to transfer vinyl but not needing to do it. Did it anyway though. If you’ve never seen the video, check it out here IMMEDIATELY! Old school insanity from Diamond Dave!

04 Prince – The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker
I can’t say enough about this song and how great it is. This might be Prince’s crowning achievement. Listen to the beat and how often he changes it. Susan Rogers, Prince’s engineer from 83 to 87, always said he was the best drum programmer she had ever seen. Timbaland has built a career out of imitating this song. Simply unbelievable yet incredibly subdued.

05 Jesu – Old Year
Justin Broadrick’s post-Godflesh band brings it slow and heavy. Love that insane heaviness!

06 Wire – Ex-Lion Tamer
Stay glued to your TV sets! One of the best songs from Pink Flag, this might also be the catchiest. You should just go check out Pink Flag if you haven’t heard it, but if you need a prior introduction, this is it.

07 Kraftwerk – Numbers (Remix)
This is the version released on the original 7” single. It includes a little bit of Computer World 2, both tracks from the Computer World album. I got this from a compilation named 7 Inch Singles 1973-1991, although I don’t think it’s a legit release as it contains a few demos from the Techno Pop era. I’ll have to post those eventually as they’re pretty fantastic, but I should probably just post the compilation as most of those versions, if not all of them, will never be reissued due to Kraftwerk’s current reissue policies. Not to mention, as many people have complained about the recent reissues, these versions have the crackles and pops that are missing from the new versions.

08 Pale Saints – Hunted
I found out about these guys while trying to find something similar to My Bloody Valentine. In the end, most everything I found was a disappointment compared to MBV, and that includes these guys, but they’re pretty great in their own way. This track ended up on an EP and the In Ribbons album, both great examples of the shoegaze movement. This is easily my favorite track by Pale Saints with its very eerie vibe that leaves you feeling like you’re being hunted. I’m not going to tell you these guys are the best, but they’re definitely worth a listen.

09 The Jim Carroll Band – People Who Died
Awesome song. This was used somewhat recently to great effect at the end of the remake of Dawn Of The Dead. Such an upbeat song about such sad events. Rest In Peace Jim.

10 The Strokes – I’ll Try Anything Once
This is Julian’s demo of You Only Live Once. I think it’s awesome how different this home made demo is from the finished version. It’s almost a completely different song! If you’re not familiar with The Strokes, get Is This It ASAP. Also, you should check out Julian’s solo album which is excellent in it’s own right. If I can spare the cash I’m going to buy the super-deluxe version of the album, as it comes with a bonus disc of demos and leftovers, a vinyl copy of the album, a DVD, a sweet book with the complete lyrics and all kinds of other neat crap. Worth $89.95? I like the album that much I think it is.

11 Sublime – Cisco Kid
I’ve never been a big fan of Sublime, but the Robbin’ The Hood album is really good. Consisting primarily of four-track demos created by Bradley Nowell alone, it’s a really fun, lo-fi record with some of his best songs and lots of oddball experimentation. The funny part is how unhappy Brad’s surroundings were at that time, as he was a heavy heroin user and spent much of his time at drug houses, which is where most of the songs on the album were created. Still, he managed to capture a happy, upbeat vibe throughout the album, adding a sunny tint to such dark days. Cisco Kid is a great example of that tint, with it’s goofy, classic-tv samples and Brad’s simple raps alongside his weird-ass, lo-fi production. Like he says in the song, “Respect to the man with the uzi”, and he probably knew that vibe better than anyone would like to know, but he still made something fun and memorable out of it.

12 Pixies – No. 13 Baby
GOD BLESS THE PIXIES!!!!! If I had a band I’d do a slow and heavy cover of this song. BAAAAAAABBBEEEEEEE!

13 Goldfrapp – Slide In (DFA Remix)
The DFA here is Mo’Wax co-founder Tim Goldworthy and LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy, as opposed to the R&B production crew that we’re going to ignore. A few years ago, Goldfrapp asked some of their favorite producers to give them some remixes. When they contacted the DFA, they told them they could remix any song of their choice in any way they chose. Well, the DFA proceeded to turn Goldfrapp’s Slide In into a thirteen minute full-on disco stomp with live drums and all the fixings. It came out on a very limited 12” initially but now is available on several comps. If you’re feeling this, you should grab both volumes of The DFA Remixes. Your jaw will drop at the consistency of their sheer awesomeness!

14 TV On The Radio – Mr. Grieves
TV On The Radio cover a Pixies rockabilly classic as a gloomy acapella dirge. Nothing new here, and not really representative of TVOTR’s output, but such a beautiful recording. This is from their awesome Young Liars EP.

15 James Brown – Funky Drummer
Something tells me that everyone probably knows all about James and how funky he is, but there was a time I had know idea how great he was, so I figured it could never be a bad thing to have a visit from JB and famous funkateers. If you’ve never heard, prepare for greatness. If you already know, sit back and enjoy the ride! Either way, a great outro to this months mix.

Beck - Beck and Dava 1990

I wish I could tell you all kinds of fascinating details about the tape these recordings are sourced from, but everything I know, and seemingly everything everyone else knows, is contained in a text file included with these tracks. Thankfully, it's an interesting story, but even if we knew absolutely nothing about the origins behind these recordings, the music would be interesting enough on it's own. This is Beck with a band that may be Ten Ton Lid, a country outfit formed with Martha Atwell, but no one is really sure. Rather than continue telling the story behind this find, I'll leave it to the contents of the original text file which you'll find below.

I got this recording from a Beck fan named Paco. When I asked him where he got it he told me: Well about 5 years ago, a friend of mine knew I was a big Beck fan and handed me a tape where I was working. He got it from his roommate who got it from another person, who supposedly knew Beck. All the tape said as well as the cover was: "Beck and Dava 1990" There was no artwork. [...] It seems like it was just a small group of friends that were there. [...] It seems someone left the tape recorder on. Unlike the other early Beck tapes we've heard, this tape is not really in an album or demo format. As Paco said, the mics were left on throughout the evening, meaning we can hear them talking, goofing around, and messing up. It's personal, a little creepy, and fairly interesting.

At around the time of this recording, Beck formed a Carter Family cover band with Martha Atwell and Mike Thoman (and possibly others) called 10 Ten Lid. This time is also spent bonding with those in the L.A. music scene: Carla Bozulich of the Geraldine Fibbers and Ethyl Meatplow, and Martha Atwell (with whom he has a short-lived Carter Family/Louvin Brothers cover band called Ten Ton Lid).

[REF 1]: Beck and his friend Martha Atwell were really into old country music. They formed Ten Ton Lid, and started playing Louvin Brothers and Carter Family songs. At one point they managed to get some shows at a bar up in the mountains of Saugus: the Big Oaks Lodge. It was a weird scene because they were playing traditional folk songs and there were old folks square dancing and college kids partying. One night Mike Tyson was there training for his fight against Buster Douglas, (they had a boxing camp out back) and he got shit faced and pissed all over the drum kit. It was Xmas and he was wearing a Santa hat. Leaving a Ten Ton Lid show wasn't easy, due to the dark, winding forest road and all the drunks heading home.

[REF 2]: Pretty soon I made a few friends who were also doing the acoustic thing. Maybe you've heard of a guy named Beck? We put together a couple of bands. One sort of funny rock band called Loser (yeah that's part of how the song happened, though its idea and composition had nothing to do with me - that was all Beck), and a funny country band called Ten Ton Lid. We played alot of shows and even toured a little with Possum Dixon. Eventually, I had a falling out with Beck, because I wanted to do something different with the music, among other things. Now he's rich and famous, and I'm still trying to finish my PhD.

[REF 3]: So could this be an early Ten Ton Lid tape? Possibly, but the lack of Carter Family songs and the non-funny nature of the tape definitely weakens this theory. It is, though, the best suggestion I've heard so far. I and others have contacted a number of people who we thought might be able to give us some answers, but so far we've had very little luck. If anybody out there knows more about this tape, please e-mail me at dnewton@whiskeyclone.net.

Huge thanks go to Paco for the tape, and almostaghost, McP, comat0se and Paco (again) for helping with song identification.

TOM WOLFE

New York Herald Tribune, New York magazine, Esquire, etc.,

Silicon Teens - Music For Parties

I said I was going to post this about two weeks ago, and sadly that didn't happen, so I'm gonna make it up to everyone and post it today. This album is all Daniel Miller doing his very minimal synth take on classic rock and roll, and one look at the track list will tell you these songs represent the truest definition of classic in this sense. Not much more to say, other than you should totally check this out. It's VERY cool! Hit their wikipedia reference for more info and click here to see the video for Memphis, Tennessee. I love when they show the number was actually written on the wall!

PS - A friendly reader named Laurie Laptop left a note in my post about Daniel Miller's work as The Normal, and offered a track to check out. It's an old-school analog synth goodie definitely in the vein of these Daniel Miller recordings, and you should give it a shot. It's called Petrol and is credited to GeminEye and you can check it out here. And thanks to Laurie for the link, very cool track!

PS2 - Also wanted to note it's amazing how many images of naked teens come up with I do a google search for Silicon Teens. I probably shouldn't be that surprised, but I am. Also, the image posted here is from an early ST single, not the album. I thought this looked a little cooler than the album's real cover, but that's included with the MP3s.

Sensational in The Wire!

Just a quick mention that Sensational is on the cover of the December issue of The Wire and there is an interview too! I'm looking for a copy right now and I'll let you all know how the interview is after I check it out. Props to Skiz and and Klaus for the heads up!

Liz Phair - The Girly-Sound Demos

I spent my teenage years in a podunk little town in Lorain County, Ohio named Wellington. Calling Wellington podunk is not really fair, as I've seen much smaller towns with far less to do for young people, but after spending my life thus far in a significantly larger town (some would call it a city), it was a terrible shock. I was never very popular and the kids I went to school with never did anything interesting, unless you consider tractor pulls interesting. The joke, and it's only funny because it's true, is the only thing to do in Wellington was to drink. I never drank, never enjoyed it much and still don't touch alcohol very often to this day, although in retrospect it might have gotten me laid a lot earlier if I had given it a shot, especially after finding good tasting wines and a lot of the girls I liked got loose when they got sloshed! Regardless though, I killed time talking with people online, trading cassette tapes through the mail, taking short trips to Cleveland to shop at once-legendary indie record shops and pestering people in Oberlin. In case you've never heard of Oberlin, it's home to a very large liberal arts college and is about ten minutes away from Wellington. I think it sucks worse than Wellington, because most people there are extremely pretentious and everyone takes everything far too seriously. They used to have courses on Eno's ambient recordings, and while that might sound cool at first, how much you wanna bet the class was filled with self-indulgent douches who thought they were better than Eno and could be the "next big thing"?

Anyway, I digress. Oberlin wasn't a complete wash, as there were a few cool things about it like the Apollo Theatre where they played current films for about two bucks on their single screen (too bad Danny Devito is involved with it now), The Feve where you could get a bad-ass swiss-shroom burger, and the best being the record shop on the second floor of the Co-Op Book Store. I learned more about music there than just about anywhere else I can think of. The main guy who ran the store (whose name I unfortunately can't remember. Maybe it was Keith? Sorry man!) dj'd all kinds of electronic music and knew about stuff I don't think I would have ever heard of otherwise. He told me about punk, funk, metal, hip-hop, noise, pop, the avant garde and anything else you can think of, always with a spot-on recommendation to check out and always prepared to play me a few tracks. With his help, I heard The Pharcyde, Aimee Mann, DJ Shadow, Frank Zappa, Squarepusher and more because he listened to what I said and answered my questions, and that's the best type of record shop employee, the one who is always willing to listen and advise but never shove their own tastes down someone's throat.

Another artist I learned about because of the Co-Op's record shop was an Oberlin legend in her own right, the fabulous Liz Phair, although I became familiar with her as I do with many artists I love, totally backwards. I had borrowed Liz's Whip-Smart from the Elyria Public Library and fell completely in love with it's simple beauty. I didn't know what she was talking about but I felt like it was my soundtrack. When the Juvenalia EP was released, I hot-footed it to the shop and picked up the only copy they had which was open for in-store play. The new songs, Animal Girl and Liz's cover of Turning Japanese, were great, but I found myself entranced with the EP's last five tracks, previously unreleased four-track demos Liz had recorded by herself while a student at Oberlin under the name Girly-Sound. It was just Liz and a guitar, sometimes multi-tracked vocals or layered guitar, but never more than Liz and the guitar. They had a seriously dirty sense of humor (California still doesn't make much sense but is funny as hell!) and sounded like the musings of someone I wish I would have known in high school. I had heard stories that she recorded these songs in her closet, afraid for anyone else to hear what she had written, which while that doesn't seem to be true was enough to grab my youthful interest.

No one I knew seemed to know where to find more of these recordings so they faded from memory, until years later when I heard Exile In Guyville, the album I should have heard first. If you haven't heard Guyville, finish reading this and go buy it immediately, there is still time for you to be saved! (You don't have to be a girl to relate to Fuck and Run, hell, you can still have your virginity! And everything else on the album is just as powerful if not just a hint more subtle, although there isn't much about Guyville that's subtle.) Like hearing Aimee Mann's I'm With Stupid for the first time, I felt the world open up a little and everything seemed a little better. Totally life-affirming.

Let's fast forward a few years to when Napster was starting to fall apart and people were moving to alternatives like Kazaa (GAWD, what an awful service! Anyone else remember those shitty ads they had that would talk to you constantly?), Bear Share (Could they have given that service a more ridiculous name? Sounds like a toy for lonely children!) and Soulseek. Soulseek is still around and doesn't suck in the least, although it's certainly not the easiest way to find what you're looking for these days, but in those days (late nineties, early 2000s?), if you were looking for something kinda rare, Soulseek was, and still is to an extent, the place to look. It's there I finally found more of Liz's Girly-Sound demos in the form of a two-disc compilation that claimed to be complete. The quality of the recordings sucked, but hearing Liz performing these songs that touched me so deeply, as well as tons of equally powerful songs she never re-recorded, in such a spare fashion was like being given the holy grail and then told to drink from it, it just got better and better!

After years of listening to those awful sounding recordings, I started looking again for more information on the origins of these recordings. For awhile there wasn't much to find, but eventually I stumbled upon a page dedicated to the Girly-Sound recordings alone, and it even contained extreme upgrades to the previously circulating versions I had, as well as information on their origins and a forum where people could discuss the tapes. I can't say it's more than I could ask for, because I'd sure love to have the rest of the non-circulating songs, but it's pretty damn close!

So, if you've got a taste for some kinda-folkie, extremely honest songwriting that will touch your inner 16-year-old (and not necessarily just in a friendly way!) you've got to check out these recordings. As the Girly-Sound site contains the two available demo tapes and all other available recordings, I'm not going to share the files here. Instead, just hit the site and grab to your heart's content. It's beautiful stuff! And thanks to the folks running girlysound.com, as you've made me truly happy as I'm sure you have many others as well!

PS - Hope the slightly NSFW image doesn't offend anyone, but since she had naked pictures of herself in the Guyville packaging and she's never been afraid to show a little skin, I couldn't think of a better image to show of Liz.

LORD LUCAN MYSTERY

I've just escaped from being murdered. He's in the house. He's murdered the Nanny!"
