Prince - Family Roughs

Just in case you were wondering about those rough Family tracks I mentioned in the previous post, here they are. The first six sound like they were recorded around the same time, which explains why rough versions of them have generally been shared together. Prince and St. Paul share vocal duties on High Fashion but Mutiny and Desire are solo Prince leads. Yes and Susannah's Pajamas both have a bit of extra performance on these takes but they're not terribly different from the released versions. Feline was an instrumental recorded during these sessions that may have been considered for the album. It had been played live for a while afterward with varying lyrics, and I've seen some of those versions labeled as Be Alive. As for the rest of these tracks, the alternate version of Nothing Compares 2 U is a more band oriented sounding performance with drums added. It's a nice alternative to the album version. Miss Understood probably wasn't intended for The Family but Susannah sings lead vocals so it often gets labeled a Family song. It sounds more like a Purple Rain era leftover which I believe it really is. Finally, there are no studio versions of Prince singing The Screams Of Passion in circulation but this interesting live rehearsal has made the rounds for quite some time. It's loose and playful so it's a lot of fun. Unfortunately I don't have any idea when this rehearsal occurred so that's all I've got regarding it. Enjoy!

Prince - Family Roughs

01 High Fashion (Rough Mix)
02 Mutiny (Rough Mix)
03 Desire (Rough Mix)
04 Yes (Rough Mix)
05 Susannah's Pajamas (Rough Mix)
06 Feline
07 Nothing Compares 2 U (Alternate Version)
08 Miss Understood
09 The Screams Of Passion (Rehearsal)

PS - Anyone else notice that Yes is basically a jazzy, instrumental version of Prince's unreleased song Lisa? Listen to them side by side and tell me the similarities aren't obvious. Of course, this wouldn't be the only time Prince reused parts of an unreleased track in a released one.
