Christian Marclay - Record Without A Cover

Christian Marclay is to turntablism as John Oswald is to sampling, a pioneer whose works can easily be placed next to other releases in those genres but do not reflect the standard rules and mores displayed by publicly revered artists. Mr. Marclay uses multiple turntables to manipulate pre-existing recordings, sometimes making blends of several works while creating something entirely it's own. In other cases, he has taken several records, cut them into pieces, and then assemble new ones from the various records, making for a truly jarring experience.

I don't have the time to do Mr. Marclay justice in this space, so if you'd like to read more about him I suggest you visit his Wikipedia reference. It's quite fascinating information and anyone interested should visit immediately! Next week I will be posting his amazing More Encores for your listening pleasure, but today I'm featuring his 1985 release, Record Without A Cover. It's a hard record to describe, and if you're expecting hip-hop or cut-ups you will most likely disappointed, but if you're interested in textures, new assemblies from disparate sources and rhythm from so-called noise, you will find it jaw-dropping!
