Morrissey - People Are The Same Everywhere/Action Is My Middle Name/The Kids A Looker

Morrissey, this wonderful rebellious child of Mother Brittania is one restless spirit. To prove that he recorded a brand new yet untitled album, tenth in his solo career and performed three new track off that album which were broadcasted on BBC Radio 2. Now judging from what I've heard, Morrissey has not lost his songwriting and performing abilities and once more delivered some really astonishing songs. But then again this is Morrissey, no one expects by less from him. The guy's simply great. I can only imagine how good would his new album be. Well here's a glimpse of what's to come. Below's three songs recorded live at Maida Vale on the 10th of June for BBC. I think they're absolutely brilliant. Hopefully they won't be the last to hear from Morrissey.

Blu - Jesus EP

I rarely listen to hip-hop nowadays but I dig this guy. Found him by accident. He's already makin' waves around the net and elsewhere. Check his latest EP below. Some raw hip-hop shit right there backed by The Alchemist, 9th Wonder, Madlib, Hezekiah and Godlee Barnes.

Coldplay - Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall

Coldplay's fifth studio album Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall is scheduled to be released later this year. Meanwhile the band just released the first single from their forthcoming album. The track "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall" can be already heard on the internet. Seems to me that the band had took a direction into more electronic sound. If this is true remains to be seen in the autumn of 2011 when the new album is supposed to hit the shelves.

Coldplay Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall

Foo Fighters - "Walk" (official video)

Well here it is. Foo Fighters' brand new video for "Walk" off their seventh studio album Wasting Light. Not a band song but I gotta admit that it's not what I expected from the Foo Fighters. Definitely their earlier works are far better than this. Still this might be appealing to post-There Is Nothing Left to Lose fans.

There Is Nothing Left To Lose Foo Fighters

Blouse

Here's this cute and relatively new shoegaze/dream-pop band Blouse I stumbled upon while looking for some new music. The band is signed to Subpop and has just two released singles to my knowledge but that doesn't stop them from being so awesome. It's interesting what they'll put out next.

The Paperbax

The Paperbax, four-piece indie-rock outfit from Sofia, Bulgaria fronted by Larry and Rebecca, is a band that I've known for quiet some time and yet never saw live. They should have been called the band of missed opportunities as they've got the perfect sound to achieve even mainstream popularity but somehow their efforts were unnoticed. I guess that most of us were way too busy with everything else to notice something as good as The Paperbax. Shame on us (including me). Now the band is no more. I've never had the chance to see them performing live and that's a big miss for me. What we actually missed was our very own take on bands like The Jesus And Mary Chain and Sonic Youth and that's unforgettable giving the fact, that one will hardly find something similar around here if such thing exists at all. Formed in 2000 The Paperbax quickly gained a regular spot the among those playing in the non-existing now legendary O!Shipka and 3Ushi clubs. After couple of year they self-released their first demo in 2003 simply titled "Ten Demo Trax" which the band distributed at gigs. Their first and only official release to date is "Mondegreen" EP which was scheduled to be released in 2007 via First Time Out Records. The record is still available for purchase as well as a free download from their last.fm page. The EP contains 5 songs that at least to me are clearly influenced by the aforementioned bands. My personal favorite song off that EP is with no doubt "My Love Letter My Suicide Note". Truly great track. I would recommend the EP to all fans of the alternative sound. It's a real shame that this was not followed by another release. In conclusion I will say that The Paperbax are a really good band that deserved greater recognition.

Dirty Dancing

Dirty Dancing. No this ain't your favorite teen flick to which you screamed, felt in love countless times and secretly envied Jennifer Grey for dancing with the love of your life Patrick Swayze or vice-versa. This is one neat indie band consisting of Eric Schoen and Lauren Mikus, both of them with considerable musical experience before getting together as a band. To me they sound like a weird combination of The Kills and Joy Division with a little bit of The Jesus & Mary Chain. Mood swings violently in their music as darker tones meet with a more mellow sounds crashing into some upbeat noises accompanied by filthy, sexy guitars. No matter how odd you might find this combination, believe me it sounds really good (depending on your mood of course). So far they got one album, the self-released "Mediocrity Is The Strongest Inevitability". Dirty Dancing's brand of indie, noisy rock is sure to attract new followers to this type of music. This is one of those indie findings that begs to be heard.

Lushlife

When it comes to hip-hop Bulgarian is way behind other countries. Not that we don't have a hip-hop of our own but it's the kind of hip-hop that is listenable only by bulgarians. And the quality is also arguable as our "rappers" spent too much time copying from artist Jay-Z, DMX and other "ghetto heroes". The end result was this absurd gangsta-like bulgarian rap which was more comical than serious. And yet it seem like that this is more appealing as evident from the concerts of 50Cents, DMX, Busta Rhymes and more recently Psycho Realm. Well because of that trend so to speak which alienate me from the whole rap thing, I begun searching and dwelling into more indie/lo-fi stuff which led me to discover some really great indie artists (which has nothing to do with hip-hop). But somewhere along the way I found this thing called alternative hip-hop by pure chance to be honest. I don't know how it happened exactly but one day I stumbled upon a guy from then New York City, called Aesop Rock and his song "No Jumper Cables". It's like one of his best known songs but for me it was something completely new. Anyways, that opened a whole new world for me and showed me hip-hop that sounded different, touched on a myriad of topics and was elegantly flirting with genres like jazz and indie music. Long story short that's how I found Def Jux, Rhymesayers, Jean Grae, Abstract Rude, J5, Living Legends, Blackstar, the great J Dilla and a handful of other artists I came to love. And above all I became even more appreciative of a genre I knew so very little about.

All this leads me to today's subject: Lushlife.
Lushlife, born Rajesh Haldar from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is one peculiar individual, one that is easy-going and definitely not shy to drink and talk with complete strangers. He's my kind of artist, one who's not afraid to experiment with other genres and to mix Kanye West with The Beach Boys or to make his own renditions of songs from artists like Soulja Boy. Backed-up by such artists like Camp-Lo, Ezhri and a host of respectful indie musicians suggests that Lushlife ain't just a kid who like to rhyme but accomplished hip-hop artist with serious attitude towards his music. The reason I'm writing about Lushlife is because yesterday, 21st of April he was in Sofia to perform as part of Alarma Punk Jazz, kind of small indie fest organized by the Bulgarian National Radio. Also like I told him that night (which is true), Lushlife was the sole reason I went that night to the small rock bar Fans. The last couple of days I was constantly listening to his music (or whatever I was able to find) from his Cassette City album. The whole thing was kinda weird. First the concert started with about 45 mins. of delay but above all Lushlife was paired with two other bands that didn't have any similarities with his music. Instead it should have been better if he was supported by the recently performed in Sofia Tokimonsta. The cute asian girl with her "Attention Deficit" is the perfect match for such an event. Yet the organizers chose otherwise inviting bands that musically were not compatible with Raj's music. Not that they were bad. It's just that they wasn't what I've expected. As for Raj Haldar, he performed tracks from his much acclaimed "Cassette City" album like "Bottle Rocket", "In Soft Focus", "Until The Sun Dies", "Another Word For Paradise" and others as well as some new material. During his set Lushlife gave everything and offered to the few that made it to the venue one unforgettable show both musically and visually. I really had a great time watching him. It was like I expected to be good but it surpassed my expectations. His set showed his talent as a MC as well as a composer as songs like "In Soft Focus" were followed by a more mellow ones. Not sure how this resonated with those handful of people that after all decided to come. To me it seemed that they've came for the other two bands. Furthermore most of the people were only head-noddin' and somehow idle. Later on I saw a much bigger movement when the other two bands started playing, Incurabili from Slovenia and No Sin from Greece. Shame really that just a few persons appreciated such raw talent if any at all. The guy deserves more than what he saw during that evening. Still it was a great night for me.

Cover art by Amanda Cerini

"Plateau Vision" is Lushlife's brand new 2011 EP which he promotes throughout his European tour. The EP which I happily own consists of six tracks, some new others bonus material from "Cassette City". A true gift for all true hip-hop connoisseurs.

... I'll write some more when I got the time 'cuz now another concert calls to be attended :-D

Guano Apes - Bel Air

Eight years after their last studio album, "Walking On A Thin Line", Guano Apes are back with "Bel Air", their fourth album containing twelve new songs. Old fans will almost instantly notice that Guano Apes are somewhat less aggressive and musically more mature. The first single released from that album. "Oh What A Night", suggests exactly that. More refined and melodic riffs is what one will clearly hear from that song. And Sandra Nasic's voice is also less gritty. As for her I'm really happy to see her back. She looks more mature and feminine and above all sexy than before and I give her a big thumbs up for that. As for the boys they've done some great works with their respective side projects. If you haven't heard them I suggest checking IO and Tamoto. The overall tone of the album is more melodic and rock compared to the previous three. As a fan of the band since "Proud Like A God" I was kinda disappointed when I first heard the new album. Not that it's bad or anything but to be honest I expected to sound like the previous one. There's no board anthems, no mighty screaming, no heartfelt ballads. Instead there's a clear turn to more rock-ish sound and experimentation in that direction. The new Guano Apes sound good, really good to be precise but it's not the old one that I'm missing. With this new album Guano Apes clearly distanced themselves from their alternative roots and opted for more mainstream approach similar to the likes of The Killers. This will most surely win them new fans but old ones might be little bit disappointed. I'll advise anyone especially fans of the old albums not to proceed with this album as with the others and to expect it to sound as the first three simply because they'll get something different which might not appeal to everyone. However if you take it as something completely different (which to some extend is) then you will enjoy one very well done rock album, one that will surely be appreciated by most rock fans in general.
Indeed a good album 4/6
