Chikita Violenta

Here's one band from Mexico that blew me away straight away. Absolutely cute and in the same time fabulous this band is a complete surprise. It's been ages since I've heard something that good that doesn't come from USA or Europe. Don't get me wrong. Latin America got some really great musicians but we europeans rarely heard about them. Viva el internet that every once in a while I get the chance to hear something as good as Chikita Violenta. Chikita Violenta are this uber-good indie-rock quartet from Mexico City consisting of Luis Arce, Andrés Velasco, Esteban Suarez and Armando David. With a solid ten years of experience and three albums this band shows that it's possible for a mexican band to carve a unique sound and in the same time to sound like indie legends Sonic Youth or Pavement. Chikita Violenta is probably the best thing to come out of Mexico since the new wave of mexican indie movies. Catchy melodies that will make one stand up and sing and dance is something that you can expect from this mexican band. Their last album to date "TRE3S" proves that once again with eleven songs that are guaranteed to stuck in your head indefinitely but for a very long time. Beginning with "Roni" the first single released off that album, a song so catchy that it's destined to be a instant hit. The Sonic Youth-esque vocals only add to that impression. "Tired" is another song that will struck one's imagination by drawing comparisons with the likes of Death Cab For Cutie or even Built To Spill with the only exception being little more up-beat. "The Pause" shows the mellow side of those muchachos with a deeper bass and less dreamy vocals. Oh and by the way of you wonder how come they sound that good the answer is probably because they are produced by Dave Newfeld, who also happened to work with Broken Social Scene. Enough said. Chikita Violenta, powerful indie-rock with dream-pop vocals at a time and lots of clapping. A must hear for all you indie lovers!
