Wanna help with the next IFM project?

I hate to bother my good readers but I'm in the early preparation stages for the next version of The Paul's Boutique Companion and was wondering if anyone out there might be able to assist me in making a REALLY SNAZZY DVD to accompany it. I've got footage from a number of sources and would like to include them on a disc with a nice menu. I can provide someone with all the content and I'd prefer this to be something made for a Dual-Layer DVD-R. So would someone be willing to help out with this? PLEASE???

On a note further, you could always help teach me how to do it. I love to learn how to do things like making DVDs and such, I just don't always have the time I used to to go digging through the internet till my eyes bleed.

a little (spring) break

Hey everyone, I wasn't planning on taking a break but I'm a bit backed up at the moment and, to be honest, exhausted by some things happening in my personal life. With that said, I've decided to take the week off from the site and get things caught up and such. I haven't spoken with David Williams, Rom and some other fine folks in a few weeks so I wanna get back in touch with them, get some posts that have been lingering in a state of incompleteness ready for prime time and, in general, catch some extra sleep. I promise that we'll be back next Monday, the 25th, so we won't be gone for too long. Sorry this is happening with such short notice but I'm really beat and need to get caught up. I'll still be responding to e-mails and messages so don't hesitate to contact me if you'd like to talk, have a question or something on the site needs to be updated. Saying Hi on the weekend

Hey everybody, no real post today but I've been so busy that I haven't been able to respond to several messages and I wanted to say thanks to everyone and I promise that responses will be coming soon.

Taking a day or two off but no one should worry about that. I just sent Steinski the post of our interview so when he gives me the okay I'll be posting that. Also, spoke with David Williams the other day and he's been tied up with SXSW so we'll get everything regarding the Jungle Brothers post finished soon. I'll post something to tide you over if it's going to be much longer. Other than that, Prince's Controversy is the next Homemade Deluxe Edition I'll be posting and then I'm going to take an extra two or three weeks between that one and the next Prince post to work on a few other things, though the site will continue as usual with daily, or at least near daily posts. Also, getting the Prince covers comp rolling and I WANT YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS! You know you wanna record a track and get it on there! I've got one finished track from my man Nate that I'll probably share soon and I have my buddy Arlon working on a cut-up of unreleased Prince cuts. You'll all know more soon! Updates/Announcements

Hey everyone, just wanted to drop in and note some happenings and make an announcement or two.

1) All of the interviews I've recently mentioned are coming soon. David Williams and I are talking regularly and he's providing further details about the recording sessions for Crazy Wisdom Masters. We're taking things a bit slowly because there is some potentially huge news around the corner regarding the Jungle Brothers, but we'll wait on discussing that. When the interview is posted I will be uploading a lossless copy of The Payback EP and some other JB's ephemera from that era which I'm sure everyone will enjoy. Really good stuff and all from excellent quality sources!

2) I've shared a few e-mails with Steinski and I'll be posting a brief interview with him soon. He told me it's alright with him to share his rarer remixes and tracks that he isn't selling on his site so I'm going to try to get a very thorough compilation of his works that aren't featured on What Does It All Mean? together.

3) If everything goes right I'll be conducting a brief interview with Alex "XXXChange" Epton on Wednesday night. I'll try to get that interview up as soon as possible. We'll be discussing his new project, Win Win, and I'm going to ask him about some of his previous collaborators like Amanda Blank and Spank Rock. If this interview doesn't happen I'll let you know, but it's on as of right now.

4) I've hinted that I've got a project I wanted to start for a while and here is the announcement: I want to curate a compilation of covers of unreleased Prince songs. I'm going to cover one myself but I really want to get a diverse set of musicians who would like to participate. This is going to be a free project, there is no money involved whatsoever and no permission has been given to cover these songs, but you're free to do whatever you want with your recordings when we're done. My intention is to post these tracks as a free download in lossless FLAC and MP3 formats. I'd like to get them online by this summer but I don't know if that's possible. Regardless, I've got a number of songs I can send you to sample from if you'd like, so if you're interested please drop me an e-mail. You can find my e-mail address in my Blogger Profile.

5) I've got more backlogged stuff to post but I've also got a pile of Warner Bros. comps that I want to share. At this point I believe I have all of the Trademark Of Quality compilations and several other bizarre promotional use collections and I intend to post them all in the next week or two. It probably sounds kinda dull but they're all pretty cool and most of them have a lot of otherwise unavailable tracks.

6) I'm starting a project with some friends called the edits. It's kind of a band but not really. We're not just about music, but that's mostly what we're working on now. I've got another site that is dedicated to the edits and it will be updated with stuff to check out as it becomes available. Regarding our sound, we don't really have a firm direction, although if pressed I'd say it's punk-hip-hop-noise-balladry, or at least that's the spirit of what we're doing. I'm making beats occasionally and it'll later be decided whether there is singing, rapping, chanting, noise or whatever atop them. Just for kicks, I might follow through on a threat and make the Metal Machine Mixtape, a tribute of sorts to Lou Reed's album, albeit with more humor than you'll find in the source material. More details to come.

7) Anyone know how I might go about presenting a television project to potential collaborators or investors? Anyone know how to find potential investors? If you want to know more about this, whether you've got suggestions or just want to know what it's about, drop me an e-mail and we can talk. It's definitely not a normal television program by any standards.


There are other things going on but more will be said when the time is right. For now, the new job is going alright and it looks like a company I could definitely stay with for awhile. There are a few musical happenings I want to mention.

Craig Wedren, the lead singer for Shudder To Think and a frequent musical collaborator with The State, has a new record coming soon named Wand. It'll be accompanied by a short film of the same name which I believe will have videos for each song on the album, but don't quote me on that. If you head on over to his site you can learn more about the new record and see an extremely ambitious interactive video for the first song from the album, Are We. It's a 360 degree video and features A LOT of members The State. I love me some Shudder To Think and The State so this looks pretty sweet! Check it out at Craig's official website.

Also, I'm on pins and needles waiting for J Rocc's new record, Some Cold Rock Stuf, to be released! Play This Too is the first single and it's incredible! Seriously, check out the stream below:

Last but not least, I was going to ask if anyone had ever seen a few rare tracks and might be able to share with me so I can share them with everyone. The only one I can think of now though is Double Dee & Steinski's remix of Tony Touch's I Wonder Why? He's The Greatest DJ. Seriously, does anyone have that? PLEASE!?!?!?!?!

I've been so busy in my personal life recently that a number of important things have been piling up. We're going to deal with a few of those things here and now, all of which are specific to you my readers!

I haven't given a schedule for the Prince Homemade Deluxe Editions because I've been kinda playing it be ear, but I've decided to get this down so I have a path to follow. Here is a tentative schedule for the IFM Records releases you can look forward to:

Next up, I've got an incredible interview which I'll be posting either next week or the week after. David Williams, one of the main producers if not THE MAIN PRODUCER for the Jungle Brothers' Crazy Wisdom Masters and J.Beez Wit The Remedy albums was cool enough to answer some of my questions and we're going to talk a little more before I write up the article, but it will answer a lot of questions about his involvement with the JB's, the album in general and lots of other things. David is a super cool guy and I'm sure everyone will be knocked out by how many details he's revealing!

Third, I received an interesting e-mail today from a British merchandising website. Apparently they're having a contest where 200 music blogs were chosen to make a Valentines mixtape. I'm not going to mention the website's name yet because this is unique for me. They want me to make this mixtape and if I get the most comments about it I can supposedly win some very nice prizes. Normally I'm not interested in taking part in such promotions but the prizes are VERY nice. That said, I'd like to know what the people who visit my website think about this. Would it be cool to participate? Could I beg you all to leave an obscene amount of positive comments and ask your friends to leave comments too? Would I be a complete heel for doing this? Seriously, if it doesn't sound good I won't take part but I want your opinions, so please leave me a comment here or send me an e-mail with your thoughts.

Finally, tomorrow I'll be posting three more discs worth of Head Automatica demos and roughs for their second album, Popaganda, and I'll be closing out the week by posting the unreleased, four disc Miles Davis box set Warner Bros. had intended for release in 2001, The Last Word. I was only going to post the unreleased tracks initially, but the entire set was remastered and those new masters haven't been released and may not be, so the whole thing is worth a look. Personally, I don't care for most of Miles' WB catalog, but the unreleased live tracks are nice and the Rubber Band tracks are rather good! WB didn't want him releasing that album and I kind of understand since I can't remember the last edgy jazz record WB has released in over thirty years (seriously, name one!), but in a strange way these tracks are very funky.

So please drop me a line, share your thoughts with me and I'll respond. Oh, one more thing, the above image is the cover I made for the HDE Purple Rain. I'm going to do a post eventually where I just post all the covers for anyone that wants to grab them all.


QUICK UPDATE: Thanks for all the positive responses guys! I've decided I'm not going to take part in their competition because certain things seem iffy. That said, I'll probably make a Valentine's Day mixtape anyway. It won't be anything mindblowing but it'll be my take on sweet songs to play for your loved one. Again, thanks to everyone for your responses! I really appreciate it!

UPDATE!!!!!!!!!! with exclamation points!

I'm kind of in a holding pattern at the moment because I'm getting documents together for a new potential employer and I'm working on a mixtape for the site so my apologies that there haven't been any updates for the last day or two. I had a post ready but I'm considering rewriting it before putting it up. Anyway, the mixtape will be a little different as it's for anyone who wants to play a game of spot the track. Hopefully it'll be done today but if not it'll be up sometime this weekend. In February I'll be posting Volume 2 of my No Rights Given Or Implied mixtape. The first volume dropped in January of 2010 as two parts available here and here. It's a fun rundown of the history of cut-up sampling records, but this next one will be quite a bit more serious. Again, look for that in February.

Happy New Year from The Unheard Music!

2011 will be upon us shortly, although it may have already arrived for you depending on where you are in the world, so I wanted to take a few minutes and thank you all for visiting the site and let you know a little about what is coming in this new year. The site itself isn't changing or anything, the focus will still be upon unreleased or rare music, though there will be a few big projects coming up. Starting in January, twice a month I will be posting a Homemade Deluxe Edition of a classic Prince album, filled with b-sides, remixes and unreleased tracks. When I'm through Prince's discography up to 1992 I will start posting HDE versions of select Prince side-projects. As of now, there are three releases ready to go and they are 1999, Lovesexy and Dirty Mind. All are two disc versions apart from Dirty Mind. I don't have a plan as to which I'm releasing first or second so if you have a preference let me know. I could also use help with the artwork if anyone wants to contribute. Squirrelgrease is a really nice guy but I haven't heard from in a while so he must be tied up, so if anyone wants to work on packaging with me it would be greatly appreciated!

Apart from the general Unheard Music stuff and Prince releases, I'm also going to be posting V4 of The Paul's Boutique Companion which may actually be spread over two DVDs, one with the audio and the other with video. I'm also working on The Thriller Companion, a lossless collection of every available unreleased, non-album or rare tracks from Michael Jackson's Thriller era, but that will be the only MJ project and I probably won't release it through this site, at least not via regular methods. I'm also going to try and get more interviews this coming year with Prince Paul and Dan The Automator on my wish list. Matt Dike is also on that list but his lack of a public presence makes it less likely for me to find success there. Last, but certainly not least, I'm working on a project called the edits. I guess you could call it a band but it's not just music I intend to be working on. One of the first projects for the edits is starting a record with others input, with the second working on music just for the edits, but more will be revealed soon.

The Unheard Music says hi. "HI!" Plus, sort of a contest!

So I haven't posted for the last few days because I've been working on other stuff. I'll get back to normal on Monday. With that said, the Prince stuff is moving along quite well and I'll still be posting the Ridiculously Deluxe Edition of Sign O' The Times on Friday the 10th. I'm not going to do it via torrents though like I originally announced, rather I'm just going to post it on two file downloading services. There will be a link posted on the 10th that will have a text file with links for the downloads. Squirrelgrease is working on the art but I know he's busy so, just in case he doesn't get it done before the 10th, I will still be posting the audio for download and I'll add the art whenever it's available. I know he'll have it soon enough though because he's awesome so don't worry about it. Also, he asked me if I wanted to have a label name for these Prince releases and I decided to go with IFM Records. Guess what IFM stands for and you'll get a prize. Seriously! The only clue I'll give is it's related to something that used to be on The Unheard Music.

Let's get totally serious here for a moment, I want the public's opinion. I'm theorizing what to do next with The Unheard Music and would like to expand a little. I still want to get a forum online and there is a secret release that's in the planning stages for the summer of 2011, but what else would be cool? I WILL NEVER ADD INTRUSIVE ADVERTISING TO THIS SITE OR ANY OTHER SITE I RUN, so don't worry, no one will ever try to get you to buy ringtones or viagra here, although I will include links for pertinent data or purchases whenever available and I do like the new Amazon feature that lets you post visual links to specific items they have for sale. Something like that isn't intrusive and it's great when you want to let people know things are available. But what about Unheard Music videos on youtube? Not videos for tracks but short programs dedicated to specific artists and records, all informative but with a good sense of humor. What do you think about that? Anyone have any other good ideas? I was thinking about marketing a barbecue sauce named after the site but my sounding boards thought that was a bad idea. It's worth noting my sounding boards in that case were an actual board of wood and a sock puppet. Maybe that wasn't worth noting.

Anyway, let me know what you think people. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE THINKING! Well, specifically related to what I've written here. You can write about other things but if you put something up about how french fries are great I'm just going to ignore it. No offense to anyone but I already know how great french fries are. TWITTER! TWITTER?

I know I mentioned this a few days ago but a friend said I should re-announce this in a regular post, so here it goes.

If you, dear reader, would like timely updates from The Unheard Music, you can now follow us (really just me) via Twitter! Just follow this LINK and you'll be brought to my Twitter page (there's that link again!) where every post will be mentioned and occasional babble will be spouted from my warped lungs.

I'm also considering making a Facebook page for The Unheard Music, but I don't understand what the benefit would be. Hell, I don't understand the benefit of doing it on Twitter, but I suppose people would find it cool to get updates on their mobile devices. What do you think? I know folks like PBthal and lots of other cool people from Avax have Facebook pages.

I'll be back later tonight or, more likely, early tomorrow morning with the last Prince side-project post until T.A.N.K. launches. Anyone have preferences? The ones I'm considering are Ingrid Chavez's album, the second version of Madhouse's 24 or Eric Leeds' Times Squared, which is essentially a Madhouse album. Tell me people, tell me!

Announcement: Prince and the Christmas present

Oddly enough, when I did a google search for Prince, vinyl and test pressing, I got a picture of an Alpaca. Alrighty then!

So here's what's up, the Christmas present is approaching completion and I want to let everyone know what the deal is with that. I'm going to be sending off e-mails to everyone who offered to help with seeding later today but now for the announcement.

On December 10th, I will be posting the Ridiculously Deluxe Edition of Sign O' The Times. It will be a seven disc box set available in FLAC and V0 MP3 and completely suitable for burning to CD and keeping in your collection. Here are the contents:

Disc 1 - Sign O' The Times:
This is a fresh rip from my own collection of an original US vinyl pressing of the album. I haven't shared this version with anyone prior to this. It has been manually declicked where necessary and sounds like a dream. It also fits entirely on one CD so you can now play it all the way through without swapping discs.

Disc 2 - B-Sides and Non-Album Tracks:
A collection of B-Sides, Remixes and Non-Album Tracks from Sign O' The Times and it's surrounding era. The majority of these tracks have been sourced from T's 12" Collection V2.0 and sound beautiful.

Disc 3 - Dream Factory:
The final version of the Dream Factory album from 86/87 that eventually became Crystal Ball/Sign O' The Times.

Disc 4 - Camille:
The unreleased Camille album. This is technically a fan assembly of the album by myself but it sounds great in my opinion. I've used the best sources for all the tracks and everything was from a lossless source, or in the case of Rebirth Of The Flesh, the best source I could find.

Disc 5 - The Black Album:
This is a fresh vinyl rip of The Black Album from a 1994 German pressing of the album. It is the same version that was posted here earlier.

Disc 6 - Outtakes:
A collection of outtakes with a focus on the Dream Factory era. Many of the tracks are taken from the Work It collection although they've been tweaked and edited for maximum quality.

Disc 7 - Additional Outtakes:
More outtakes with a focus on the Crystal Ball/Sign O' The Times era.


I also have 24 Bit, 96khz versions of the SOTT and Black Album vinyl rips which I'm considering posting, although I'm really interested in trying to make DVD-Audio discs from them. I would assume that would make it easier for most people to enjoy them.

Squirrelgrease, the fellow who did the amazing art for Fun With Vinyl's collections, is doing the art and packaging for this collection so you know it'll be excellent! Big thanks to him! I'd still love to see any art anyone wants to contribute to this project or their own personal visions, kind of like the NIN community has done for their fan releases, but we can discuss that later. Regardless, SG is gonna kick a ton of ass!

As this won't be the last homemade deluxe edition of a Prince album I make, it's worth stating that I'm starting a new blog that will run alongside The Unheard Music, although it won't be updated nearly as frequently. That site will be named There Are No Kings and it will focus on those deluxe editions as well as Prince side-project deluxe editions. At the moment, the first two releases planned for that site are the lossless version of the Lovesexy deluxe edition I posted here earlier, although I'm going to tweak it a bit before posting it, and a two disc version of Purple Rain with the main album sourced from the 2008 Kevin Gray mastered vinyl reissue of the album that Rhino released. I'm planning for the first thing to be posted to T.A.N.K. in January, though it might be a little earlier.

I'm going to cut a little early on the lossless side-project releases here and share the last one next week, though I might continue sharing them at T.A.N.K. before January. All T.A.N.K. updated will also be shared here.

Finally, the deluxe edition projects, as I'm planning them, will feature fresh vinyl rips of the albums in question. I've got a number of Prince albums on vinyl but I don't have them all, so if you have some and can do good vinyl rips please let me know, I'd love to use your rips for those releases and I'll make certain you get credit for your work. Apart from that, more info will be given as we get closer to 12/10/10. Now if only I could get Prince to pay me to do this! That'll be the day!

Memo from the home office

I promise the site isn't going anywhere, I'm just changing my address in the real world. That said, while I will be able to respond to e-mails from time to time, I probably won't be able to do any posts until next Wednesday. So, in case you were worried you wouldn't get next week's blast of lossless Prince goodness Monday, you can have it today! No description or anything this time, just the goodness of Jill Jones' 1987 self-titled album in lossless FLAC and V0 MP3. The only minor change I made was separating the the opening intro and first real song, Mia Bocca, into individual tracks. No gaps though so it shouldn't cause any problems. Sorry I haven't been around...

Hey guys, I just wanted to let everyone know I'm not dead. I've been really busy with work, helping a friend get ready for a wedding and I've also been a little under the weather, so I'm sorry I haven't been as attentive lately. I've got a significant stockpile of stuff to share with you all, I've just got to get some time to get it together. PS - This is important. The Parking Lot Experiment, as I'd mentioned I wanted to recreate it this summer, is not happening, at least not this year. There might be a smaller Boom-Box Experiment in July, but I'll let you know if that happens. Sorry, but it's hard to find a location that will suit the project. Don't want it to start raining while you're sitting in the open now, do ya?

A RIDICULOUSLY IMPORTANT UPDATE!!!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen, I've received some notes that people have either been having trouble opening some of the .rar files I've uploaded recently or downloading some of the posts. As for the downloading, I don't know what the difficulty is and I have no suggestion other than to try again. Sorry. Regarding the damaged files though, I have a few important things I can tell you...

1) If you're a Windows user and open your files with WinRAR, I have included a recovery record with all of my posts since around the beginning of February. In WinRAR, click Tools in and choose Repair Archive, WinRAR should do the rest.

2) If you're a Mac user, I've been informed that you should try using The Unarchiver to open .rar files. From what I understand, people who had received errors using standard Mac programs to open the .rar files had no trouble when they used The Unarchiver. I've linked the download in this text, but I'll link it again right HERE! HUGE thanks to Darjeeling for finding this program and letting me know about it! You are the man, man!

3) A little further detail on why I use mediafire for posting files. It's free! That's a big plus as I don't have a lot of cash to purchase my own server or whatever and I'm sure I couldn't afford the fees once the downloads went over the data limits. On top of that, for the most part, mediafire has worked pretty well. That said, if anyone has any suggestions for alternatives, I'd love to hear them because it could always be a smoother process.

Finally, I've re-posted the Miles Davis link and I'm working on Culturcide right now. Please let me know if anyone has any problems with them.

Important Information/Liz Phair - Phairities

Hey folks, just wanted to drop you a line and let you know some things that are kinda important that I've hinted at here.

First off, the thing I mentioned a few days ago, the first (maybe?) annual Unheard Music get-together thing, I want to re-create the Flaming Lips' Parking Lot Experiments. I didn't get a lot of responses, which is probably because I didn't come right out and say what I was talking about, but what I got was very promising. I really want to try this and hope to pull it off in early June if I can get an appropriate number of people to participate. There will be no fee to participate and I am not asking for funds or donations of any sort, just to be 100% clear. I don't have all the details about where this will occur worked out yet, and I'm trying to contact the Flaming Lips to get their permission to use tracks from Zaireeka for the event. Hopefully, since there is no money involved, it won't be a problem, but until I hear back you never know. So, if anyone is interested in participating, let me know and we can discuss adding you to the list of participants. Apart from that, this project has quite a ways to go before it's ready for prime time. I'm going to post flyers at several of the colleges in my area, try to hype the event to college radio stations in the area, and there will be a website for further details when they start to solidify.

Second, Imaginary Records, the "sister" site to the Unheard Music, is going on hiatus after four posts. Yeah, I know, kinda lame, but it's not working out. It may eventually return, but for now it will no longer be updated.

Third, I haven't actually gotten around to posting any videos like I talked about at the beginning of the year (or was it the end of the year?), but I still hope to do that, I've simply been very busy, so don't give up hope, it will happen!

Fourth, lots of things I've been holding back will appear in March, including Beck, the last Zappa post for a while, a WaxTrax! Records retrospective, and the triumphant return of Miles Davis! The Miles post is going to be crazy as it contains the near-complete sessions for one of the greatest jazz recordings in history and some interesting details surrounding the pseudo, incomplete, and totally unneccesary reissue of them since it's missing TONS of content, but at least it didn't claim to be "COMPLETE" this time! There are a bunch of other things I'll be posting, but those three are pretty cool so be on the lookout!

Finally, this is the last Liz Phair post, at least for now. I have exhausted my findings so now we have to wait until some lucky soul (hopefully me!) gets to interview Liz and ask her about the third Girly-Sound tape. This collection though features lots of rarities and non-album tracks and has been named Phairities by some clever collector(s). Unfortunately, my copy, which I've had since who knows when, comes with little information about the track sources, so apart from what I know and can confirm, some of the stuff here is a bit of a mystery, but I'm sure you'll find it quite enjoyable regardless. You know, this might not be the definitive last Liz post for now as I have an upgrade of two tracks from this collection that I should post, and I may post that in March, but this will most likely be the last CD-length post for the known future. And hey, it's always a good excuse to post more sexy photos of Liz!

KICK-ASS!!!!!

Not a regular post, just a quick update. There will probably be a new post tomorrow or Thursday. First off, just saw the red band trailer for Kick-Ass last night. While I'm sure many have seen it already, if you're a comic nerd or something along those lines, you've gotta see it! Just follow this link and watch Hit Girl get absolutely midevil on some motherfuckers! On top of that, Zombieland hit DVD today in the US, which is awesome! If you haven't seen it and you like zombies, violence and dumb-ass humor you'll love it! Ignore all the crap on the cover though, it's NOTHING like The Hangover, Shaun Of The Dead or Superbad, it's all it's own thing. Oh, and best of all, LOST IS BACK TONIGHT! So yeah, I'm in full-on geek mode at the moment and will be focusing all my attention on my television for the next three hours in mere minutes. Before that though, a few things...

First off, a lot of people have downloaded Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music here and I hope you've enjoyed it, but Mr. Reed is reissuing it's original quad mix on DVD and Blu-Ray as well as a special stereo mix on vinyl, so I'm removing the download link and asking if you like the album to at least pay a visit to Lou's site and see the formats available. You can see his site here. I bought the vinyl/DVD combo, as I don't believe in Blu-Ray, because it's a force of unholy evil that is attempting to destroy the known universe. Seriously.

Second, The Unheard Music's "sister" site, Imaginary Records, is live, albeit in it's early stages. Please pay a visit. It will be updated once a week. There is a lot less going on over there than here, but it's kind of an experiment, so if you're expecting more of the same please be warned it's a different animal.

Updates and Stuff (I hope I didn't piss off Carl Craig)

I guess October is gonna be a rough month for me guys. Work is great but it's keeping me really busy, which means I haven't had as much time to update the site as I usually do. That said, I think next week will be more normal and I've got several posts almost ready to go.

Sadly, I think I pissed off Carl Craig. Now, I don't want to hear anything about people sending hate mail towards him or whatever, what happened is I contacted his PR people about an interview. Initially they were up for it but when they saw I had posted all the 69 EPs, despite being out of print in their original forms and edits apart from the vinyl box set, they said Carl would probably not do an interview with a site like mine. I quickly removed the files and confirmed this with them, and they said they'd let me know about the interview, but I haven't heard back from anyone so I guess it's not happening. I want to let you know though, Carl's people are VERY COOL! They did not pitch a fit or anything, they were extremely professional and made it clear in a very friendly way, so no one should complain about stuck-up artists and their people or anything like that. Carl is class and so are the people he works with. Anyway, who knows, maybe down the road that interview might happen. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

A few interviews have happened that I'm going to be writing about really soon. David Noller of Dynamix II spoke to me recently and he's given me permission to post a really cool compilation of his stuff. Very cool guy! Sean Carlin from Dink/Kind took me to a rehearsal for Kind that rocked! I'd like to talk to him a little more before I write my post but there is nothing wrong with two posts about some kick ass people. Rom from Phoenecia/Schematic said he has some more exclusive stuff for me to post and that should be coming soon. I've also sent off some questions to Richard Devine and I was contacted by David Williams who engineered on the Jungle Brothers' Crazy Wisdom Masters album. Mr. Williams said he would try to contact me soon about my questions, but he's been very busy with family issues, so I hope everything is alright for him and his family and friends.

Finally, next week I will be re-uploading several files which I've been told have become broken over time, so Monday or Tuesday will be dedicated specifically to that. Let me know if anyone has had any problems with files that they haven't written about previously.

Prince Week, Epilogue: Sheila E. - Fe

I hope you've found this week's Prince posts entertaining. To be honest, it kind of burnt me out as most of these posts are so long. Over the next week my posts will be a bit more sporadic as I'm going to relax and play around with my new turntable, but I'll be around, I'll be answering e-mails and comments, and I will still be writing posts. In particular, there will be some Prick/Lucky Pierre/Kevin McMahon posts that I'm sure fans of his and NIN will find very interesting. I'm also going to be talking about Sean Carlin from Dink and what he is up to and I just got a very kind e-mail from David Williams, so there may be more Jungle Brothers details in the near future. So, don't go anywhere, because there is a lot more to come and I promise, I'm not going anywhere, just taking a few days to relax.

Before I start my little break, I wanted to post one more Prince-related obscurity. Sheila E. was one of Prince's proteges, one of his drummers and sometimes his girlfriend. It's often glazed over how talented she is in favor of her Prince connection, which is really ridiculous when you see her credits. Visit her wikipedia page and prepare to be blown away if you doubt me! That said, Sheila had a rather tumultuous relationship with the purple one and, when it was over, she decided to continue recording as a solo artist for Warner Brothers. Her first Prince-free release was the dance/pop album Sex Cymbal, but apart from the title track, the album wasn't a big seller. It's common knowledge from there that Sheila disappeared as a pop-artist and returned to her Latin percussion roots, becoming a member of Gloria Estefan's band and performing with many others before eventually reappearing as a solo recording artist in the early 2000s, but what a lot of people don't know is that she recorded another album for Warner Brothers after Sex Cymbal.

Not much is known about Fe. People became aware of it when someone sold a Warners internal cassette of the album on ebay a few years ago. A very high quality rip of the album eventually surfaced online and has been quietly shared among fans of Sheila and Prince since. I've read criticisms that the album is far more subdued than her live shows and that some of the material was re-recorded for her early 2000s albums, but I still enjoyed Fe very much. Sheila even went so far as to re-record The Glamorous Life as a full-blown Latin percussion party jam, probably knowing that it would be her big chance at getting the album seen by the mainstream. Unfortunately, it must not have been enough for Warners, as the album was shelved and remains unreleased, but credit must be given to whomever purchased that cassette for transferring it and sharing it with the world, especially after paying the ridiculous fee of $461 in the auction!

I guess the lesson to be learned here is for proteges not to consider themselves has-beens just because their mentors don't need them anymore. Prince has a long and well documented history of being far less than kind to his proteges, attempting to control every move of their careers until they look like copycats of his style. Some people might see that as a savvy business plan on Prince's part, but very few of his artists ever benefitted from their connections to him so I have to believe it's proof of his raging ego. So, props to all of his supposed proteges who have gone on to do well for themselves in whatever fields they have chosen. And massive props to Sheila E. for being Sheila E.! Hell, even Prince asked to re-hire her eventually! Enjoy!

taking the weekend off and some updates

I'm taking the weekend off as I'm visiting family, but you can always send me an e-mail or leave a message in a post and I'll get back to you quickly. No matter what I say about taking a break, I'm never far from a computer. That said, I wanted to share some information about what's going on with the site.

First off, I'm sure you've noticed the new logo for the site. My great friend Bobby Makar of Film Makar Productions designed it and some of the variations that have made appearances here for me. He and I haven't settled on the final version yet but it'll be up soon. When I put it up I'm also gonna provide contact info for Bobby if anyone wants to drop him a line or ask him about work that he does. He's an ultra-cool cat and I'm sure he'd love to hear from you about the logos or any other work he does.

Second, there are gonna be some pretty cool posts coming soon. I've been in contact with Sean Carlin from Dink but so far we haven't been able to make our schedules come together. Sean is a really nice guy and I know he'll sit down and talk with me soon, and the last thing I want to be is a pest to him. Hopefully he'll talk to me about the unreleased album(s) Dink recorded for Capital as well as the band's origin and what everyone is up to now.

Third, I've been talking with Romulo Del Castillo, better known to the world as a co-founder of Schematic Records, one half of the group Phoenecia (pka Soul Oddity) and also a solo artist under the name Takeshi Muto. For the uninformed, Schematic is like an American Warp Records, so for people who love Aphex Twin, Autechre and Boards Of Canada, you'll love Schematic! Rom is super, ultra, CRAZY FUCKIN' COOL and he's provided me with all kinds of info on Schematic, the artists involved with the label and what is going on with the label and Phoenecia now. I'm going to write a very detailed post on Schematic and Phoenecia, and that will most likely appear within the first third of September. Rom also told me he'll be sending me some exclusive content for the post, including a now thoroughly unavailable recording almost no one has heard which he has given his blessing to me sharing with all of you! So, keep your eyes open for that post, it's gonna be huge!

Finally, I've been in contact with David Williams a few times in the last few months about doing an interview in relation to the Jungle Brothers' Crazy Wisdom Masters. David seems really nice but I know he's busy so we haven't gotten to talk about anything yet. This will be a very cool post as David was involved in the creation of the album in it's earliest stages, and he wants to refute stories about his being fired. Hopefully this will start up more conversations on the album and why it isn't out.

All three of these posts are really big deals to me because these people are heroes to me! Schematic has been one of my favorite labels for years and I can assuredly say I've tried to follow them through all their stages, so it's a dream come true getting to talk with someone who has produced music I love so much! Same goes for Sean Carlin, as he was a local hero to me and part of the reason I got involved in music and being a dj. I always wondered how someone could put out such a great record and tour relentlessly for it, only to have the label shoot them down. Sean is loaded with stories and a great attitude so I know we're gonna have a great talk. And David, like a lot of people involved with Crazy Wisdom Masters, has been very cool talking about the album, which is something no one had to do, and I can't begin to show my appreciation for them sharing their time and memories with me. I know they all have other things more pertinent to them going on other than talking with a blogger who loves their works, so I wanna give a big thanks to all of them and everyone else who has talked to me for this site, because I couldn't have done it without their help! Same goes for everyone who visits the site! I knew there were other people who loved a lot of the same things I did, but I didn't know I'd find so many of them by starting my little site, so I've gotta give a huge thanks to all of you for visiting and checking out my posts!

One more time, to everyone I've talked with, that has shared info with me, that has given me their time and answered my questions, and everyone that visits the site, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!

This is my third posting of this album, but I wouldn't be doing it if there weren't an important reason. An extremely gracious user by the name of anothergirl, the source of the original posting of the album over at the fantastic MySpleen site, wrote me to give me the proper names of all the tracks on the album. A lot of the track names remain the same, but there are a good few with entertaining corrections which are worthy of a download. On top of that, I'm posting the album with a fresh download link just in case the previous one has died. So, if you don't already have it, do yourself a favor and grab this excellent album. That reminds me, at one point I commented that this album wasn't great but was still very funny. I would like to retract that comment as this IS A GREAT ALBUM AND IT IS VERY FUNNY TOO! So grab it already!
