Anal Cunt - Howard Is Bald

Sorry if the title of this post offends anyone, but that is the band's name and they have a habit of living up to it. That said, Anal Cunt is basically three jokes done over and over again with varying degrees of success, and the joke is usually to make a lot of noise, cover a popular song while making a lot of noise or say really offensive things while making a lot of noise. The noise part, it's pretty important. Because of these facts, despite some of their music being intensely funny, you really only need one album by them, and Top 40 Hits is probably that album. If you need more Anal Cunt though, Howard Is Bald is the one to get. Drunkenly improvised over disco records, all while endlessly mocking the record's namesake, Howard Is Bald is easily one of the most insane examples of homegrown hilarity.

Please don't take their offensive song titles or abusive words seriously, these guys are far too ridiculous to mean anything they say. In the over twenty years they've existed they've come to represent the sound of bored teenagers making talentless noise while getting drunk off of cough medicine or smoking crappy joints, all the while doing so rather professionally. It's hard to explain how they could be professional other than to say far more thought than necessary has clearly gone into their output. Seth Putnam, the group's leader, almost died of a drug overdose and fell into a coma, only to survive and play songs like You're In A Coma. Clearly, the dementia is part of the appeal.

Like I said, don't take these guys too seriously. I suggest you download this, plant your tongue firmly in your cheek and go drive around listening to these incredibly stupid songs. I'm including Top 40 Hits for download as well as you should hear it. Damn, these guys are stupid as hell, but that's part of the charm.

The State's Album Gets An Official Release!!!!!

This is a really quick post folks because I'm about to walk out the door, but I thought this was important. Before I continue though, thanks to everyone who has written to me about Fripp and Belew! Your advice has been excellent and I'm in the process of checking out everything that's been suggested. I have a post of something rare that was provided to me that's Fripp related coming up, but first...

It has been brought to my attention that The State's unreleased comedy album, Comedy For Gracious Living, will see a limited release on September 10th this year via Rhino Handmade! Now, my opinion of Rhino Handmade has fallen since their miserable handling of the original Stooges reissue, and I should warn people that their purchases could potentially be delayed, but this is an essential release and a truly rare opportunity to procure an item which would otherwise have never gained official release status. I will be purchasing a copy regardless of Rhino Handmade's troubles and suggest if you love The State and the album that you do too, especially since it will only be $19.98! There is no word as to how limited this release is, and something tells me they're not expecting a huge swarm of purchases, so if you really want one I'd suggest you place an order soon. I've gotta wait till the first of September but my order is pretty much written in stone!

With the official release of this album, even in a limited status, I will be deleting the download links from all posts related to this album when it is released, although the articles will remain online. Hopefully a digital download is also made available if there is enough interest. On a few related notes, I have no idea if The State are getting paid for this release, but let's hope they are. That said, I'm sure you've noticed I've linked the hell out of this post to the official Rhino Handmade site in hopes people check this out. This is just too cool! Makes me wonder, although I will never take credit for leaking the album (apparently someone from the group gave it away as part of a contest and David Wain has even spoken publicly about the album, and I originally got it from some very friendly folks at MySpleen), might my original article have contributed to the album's official release? Okay, I'm finished kissing my own ass, if you love it grab it, and if you don't know check out the original post and download it while it's still available. Later!

Boris The Sprinkler are no more but that doesn't mean you shouldn't support them if possible, and you can grab Kill The Ramones on their Mega Anal album. Also, no real negativity towards the Ramones or Sex Pistols is present. Tongues firmly planted in cheeks.

This is my third posting of this album, but I wouldn't be doing it if there weren't an important reason. An extremely gracious user by the name of anothergirl, the source of the original posting of the album over at the fantastic MySpleen site, wrote me to give me the proper names of all the tracks on the album. A lot of the track names remain the same, but there are a good few with entertaining corrections which are worthy of a download. On top of that, I'm posting the album with a fresh download link just in case the previous one has died. So, if you don't already have it, do yourself a favor and grab this excellent album. That reminds me, at one point I commented that this album wasn't great but was still very funny. I would like to retract that comment as this IS A GREAT ALBUM AND IT IS VERY FUNNY TOO! So grab it already!

The State - Comedy For Gracious Living

I was going to name this post "AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT" but I was afraid too many people would assume there was a Monty Python connection here, so I'm going with the standard "Artist Name - Album Name" format. Suddenly I feel so industrious!

Come with me as I recall a time when MTV didn't completely suck. It was still on it's way to total suckdom, but at least the original programming was still interesting and Kennedy was hosting 120 Minutes. We had Beavis and Butthead, Liquid Television (which begat Aeon Flux!) and The State. There was some serious crap too (Dead At 21 or whatever that piece of shit was called) but the good stuff really made up for it, and for my brother and I, The State was some of the best stuff on television.

For those unfamiliar with the show, it featured a rather large cast and focused on obscure, abstract or eccentric humor much in the way Monty Python or Mr. Show did. The show aired for three seasons from 1993 to 1995 and featured memorable characters such as Doug ("I'm outta heeeeeeeeeere"), Louie ("I'm gonna dip my balls in it!"), Barry & Levon and Old Fashioned Guy. It's quite possible they might never have broken up if it weren't for a terrible deal they signed with CBS for a series of specials. Their sole CBS production was a Halloween special featuring new skits, lots of cameos and a musical performance by Sonic Youth. Needless to say, they're not on TV anymore.

Since the end of the group and show, many members have gone on to become quite successful including Michael Ian Black, best known for his participation in the I Love The 80's and other decade specials on VH1 as well as several sitcoms, and David Wain who directed Role Models and is involved in a multitude of projects, yet everyone in the cast is still working in the entertainment industry and stays in touch with each other regularly which has led to further collaborations on shows like Reno 911!, Stella and Viva Variety as well as films like Wet Hot American Summer and Role Models.

Despite their continued work with and without each other, there has been a continued want from both fans and the group themselves for a complete reunion and so, with much joy abounding from all directions, it was announced some time ago that they are indeed working on a new film which will reunite the entire cast. It's quite unclear as to when this will happen, but it's good news that they're at least working on it in one way or another. On top of this, it was finally confirmed that on July 14th of this year, the entire series will see release on DVD! So, I'm sure you can all read how ecstatic I am about all this! What isn't getting released though is what really surprised me.

A few years ago I read about a comedy album the group had produced for Warner Brothers records (God, there they are raring their heads again!) that was deemed unsuitable for release. Not much is known as to why it didn't see the light of day, but it's probably because none of the show's recurring characters are featured and several of the sketches are quite bizarre and vulgar. Of course, that's music to my ears and, upon finding that some pals from MySpleen were indeed hosting the full album, I hopped on that download like a person who jumps up quite vigorously for something they considerably want! And so, it is with great honor, that I present to you today, The State's great (okay, maybe it's not that great, but it is pretty funny) unreleased album! Spread the word and enjoy this collection of oddities or I shall be forced to purchase $240 worth of pudding and sweet talk it until it begs for my love!

Don't worry, I won't hold it against you if you don't get that last reference. Oh, and while we're at it, thanks to anothergirl over at MySpleen for posting this and you should go to The State's official site. Like now. Seriously.
