So Prince is claiming he doesn't plan on issuing another album, eh? Why don't I buy a word of that? It's rather funny actually, as everyone knows he's a rather compulsive studio guy. Reminds me of something Z-Trip once said about mash-ups, claiming that the only way people should make them is by cutting records live. Uh, why should I take your word? Who made you an expert? Well, Z-Trip is an expert when it comes to live mash-ups but seriously, who is he to make the rules? You're supposed to make music because you enjoy it, and Prince has been doing that forever, although we'll probably never hear all of it. Making rules that override everything ruins the fun part of music, the experiments and the mistakes. Mash-ups took on a new popularity because of homegrown producers that wanted to put their favorite songs together for whatever reason they thought it was a good idea. That's how it works, and that's also why I'm so glad there are people like David Chandler, aka DJ Brokenwindow, out there to entertain and make you think about what you could be doing with your music.
Chandler is probably best known as Solenoid or for his label, Community Library, of which you can read more about here, but around the turn of this century he released two records as DJ Brokenwindow on kid606's Violent Turd label. Both records are collections of vinyl mash-ups Chandler made by taking records and syncing them with each other. That probably sounds rather pedestrian at first, but we're talking about actual records, manually syncing them together, and doing so (almost) entirely without digital editing tools. On top of that, he even provides basic instructions on how to sync the records he used so you could do it yourself. And as if all of those things weren't cool enough, the mash-ups are actually rather good and the whole affair is intensely entertaining!
Below you'll find the first volume of Parallel Universe for your aural enjoyment. I'll post the second volume on Saturday. For now though, get this and play it while you're doing whatever it is you're doing, be it housework, exercise, playing with your kids (be careful about some of these tracks if that's the case), whatever, but be prepared to find a new, bizarre and, above all, intensely entertaining soundtrack to whatever you're doing. Seriously, I don't want to give away any of the wonders you'll find within this album, you should explore it and find the amazement within, although I will say the Krautrock track mixed with "C" Is For Cookie should give you a clue what to expect!
