Mental Architects - Patience, Communication, Understanding, Go! EP

I got via email the upcoming EP by bulgarian math-rockers Mental Architects, Patience, Communication, Understanding, Go! which I've been listening to for couple of days now. I gotta admit that it's captivating and a damn good one. Also thanks to them I gained deeper knowledge about a genre a knew almost nothing.

Mental Architects's blend of heavy drumming and complex guitar sound is unlikely to go unnoticed. Part of what is known as math rock, this young bulgarian band combines skilfully different musical techniques in order to achieve it's unique sound. Slower and melodic guitar riffs are immediately entwined with prolonged distorted-like accords and all this beautifully intersected by some really powerful drum beats. At times their music feels like a roller-coaster, speeding through your head and moments later you feel like you've been transported to a different and abstract reality where tranquility surround you. Such music is very different from what most people are used to. It's a music that evokes different moods at once as melodic sections are bridged with heavier and speedier ones into something kinda like a beautiful disaster. Upon careful listen one can hear each and every distinctive layer of guitar sound in each of their tracks. By definition math-rock consists of elaborate and complex combinations of different sounds and Mental Architects is no exception here. Their forthcoming Patience, Communication, Understanding, Go! EP is an excellent four-track example on how a good math-rock record should sound like. I gotta admit that this young bulgarian band has released a record they should be proud of and one that could bring them to prominence. Really well crafted EP that show skills and willingness to go beyond the universally accepted norms of composing rock music. Readers of this blog as well as music enthusiasts are already familiar with the officially released first single off that EP titled "Go!" which is a truly fantastic track. Heavy yet less aggressive is "Count To Eleven" which immediately cough my attention upon first hearing. Somehow haunting guitars are combined with some excellent drumming which makes for an really unique sound experience. Speaking of drumming during the entire EP I noticed that the drummer had put alot of effort into each song. "Ash On Your Tongue" is interesting song because it starts and ends with fast and heavy guitar riffs but the midsection is significantly slower and more melodic. "We Shall Make Each Other" compared to the other songs is different because the overall tone of the composition is more mellow and calm, with much more melodic parts. The introduction of the song is rather slow, more abstract and hazy. The midsection speeds up a little and by the end it gets heavier for an epic finale.
In conclusion I would say that Mental Architects' Patience, Communication, Understanding, Go! EP is a really interesting and well executed piece of music, one that have to be heard and felt at the same time. Really worth buying!
