Nine Inch Nails - Remixes

I promised I'd bring something nice for everyone when I got back from my little vacation! That said, I'm not 100% back yet but I will be soon. Also, massive thanks to Josh and bgpu for hooking me up with the lossless copies of the Lapdance remix. Let me know how I can pay you back!

This is a collection of every remix that Trent Reznor has done for a group other than his own. Pretty self explanatory, eh? Links for FLAC and MP3 files are below as well as notes about the tracks.

01 Machines Of Loving Grace - Burn Like Brilliant Trash (Radio Edit)
02 Machines Of Loving Grace - Burnt Offering
03 Machines Of Loving Grace - Burn Like Brilliant Trash (Dub)

Trent's first officially released remixes, he is not actually credited with remixing the track but rather re-producing it. Brian Liesegang, later of Filter, is crediting with providing assistance.

04 Megadeth - Symphony Of Destruction (The Gristle Mix)
05 Megadeth - Symphony Of Destruction (Gristle Mix Edit)

Trent is backed up with a "Deconstruction Team" consisting of Chris Vrenna and Sean Beavan, credited as technicians.

06 Queen - Stone Cold Crazy (Re-Produced by Trent Reznor)
07 Queen - Tie Your Mother Down (Re-Produced by Trent Reznor)

These remixes were produced for Hollywood Records' Queen reissue series from the early nineties, though neither was ever officially released. Stone Cold Crazy was issued twice on promotional CDs, though it's not clear where Tie Your Mother Down came from.

08 Curve - Missing Link (Screaming Bird Mix)
Trent and Flood share the credit for this amazing remix that slows down the original massively, almost like a "screwed" hip-hop track while maintaining the pitch. This one is incredibly heavy.

09 Butthole Surfers - Who Was In My Room Last Night? (Trent Reznor Remix)
Trent piles some noise and drum machines on the Surfers' paranoid tale of, uh, paranoia.

10 Marilyn Manson - Mother Inferior Got Her Gunn
There is some serious umph added to this remix of Manson's Get Your Gunn. Listen closely because Trent contributes sax to the main track.

11 KMFDM - Light (Fat Back Dub)
Trent is once again joined by Chris Vrenna as he provides his engineering skills and assistance on this remix from an album's worth of remixes of the same tune.

12 David Bowie - The Hearts Filthy Lesson (Alt. Mix)
Credits are shared by Trent, Chris Vrenna and Dave "Rave" Ogilvie on this hypnotic remix. Love the glitchy outro. Madonna Wayne Gacy gets a credit for additional manipulation and Angel Ylisastigui as the assistant.

13 Killing Joke - Democracy (Conspiracy Theory Averted Mix)
14 Killing Joke - Democracy (Bi Partisan Mix)
15 Killing Joke - Democracy (Right Wing Militia Mix)

These are the exceptions to the rules, as Trent isn't directly credited with anything on these three remixes. Rather, Charlie Clouser handles the additional production and programming, Dave "Rave" Ogilvie does the mixing and Danny Lohner provides additional guitar. Despite Trent's name not appearing here, these mixes are often considered an early example of what Tapeworm was assumed to sound like. A few years later, Killing Joke would release a remix album named Wardance, featuring another remix of Democracy that sounds like it was taken from these sessions, although it was credited as the NIN Remix. That said, all three contributors to these mixes were important members of Nine Inch Nails at this point in it's existence, though it is a bit misleading to see their credit given to their then employer.

16 David Bowie - I'm Afraid Of Americans (V1)
17 David Bowie - I'm Afraid Of Americans (V2)
18 David Bowie - I'm Afraid Of Americans (V3 feat. Ice Cube)
19 David Bowie - I'm Afraid Of Americans (V4)
20 David Bowie - I'm Afraid Of Americans (V6)

Trent and the Nothing all-stars are out in full force on these five remixes from the EP for I'm Afraid Of Americans. The Nothing Collective, all-stars, or whatever you'd like to call them, this time around are Charlie Clouser, Danny Lohner, Dave "Rave" Ogilvie, Keith Hillebrandt and Brian Pollock. And yes, that is indeed Ice Cube on the third remix, not so much rapping but almost ranting about how dangerous America is. If I remember correctly, Trent was quoted as saying that this collaboration with Cube didn't turn out like he'd wanted it to.

21 Puff Daddy & The Family - Victory (Nine Inch Nails Remix)
22 Puff Daddy & The Family - Victory (Nine Inch Nails Remix) (Radio Edit)
23 Puff Daddy & The Family - Victory (Nine Inch Nails Remix) (Instrumental)

This is easily one of the coolest remixes Trent was ever involved in. All the fake bravado is stripped away with Trent creating a brand new, incredibly dark backing track. Interestingly enough, the B.I.G.'s uncensored vocal track is used and the uncensored remix is the only version with those extra lyrics. The uncensored remix was given an official release on a maxi-single while the radio edit and instrumental were issued on a promo CD. Keith Hillebrandt is credited with programming while Dave "Rave" Ogilvie and Steve Duda are credited with "more stuff". "Rave" also did the mix and Brian Pollock gets an assistant credit.

24 12 Rounds - Pleasant Smell (Rethought by Trent Reznor, Keith Hillebrandt And Clint Mansell)
25 12 Rounds - Pleasant Smell (Rethought by Keith Hillebrandt, Clint Mansell And Trent Reznor)

The only single from 12 Rounds' second album, Trent, Charlie Clouser and most of the Nothing Collective provided some incredible remixes for it's release. These are the two Trent was involved in, a slow burner and a rave-up.

26 Killing Joke - Democracy (NIN Remix)
From the Wardance remix album. It's simply credited to Nine Inch Nails but Trent probably has no involvement. Rather, Charlie Clouser, Dave "Rave" Ogilvie and Danny Lohner are most likely the responsible parties.

27 N*E*R*D - Lapdance (Trent Reznor Remix)
28 N*E*R*D - Lapdance (Trent Reznor Remix) (Clean Edit)

I can't find much info as to whom Trent worked with for this remix, but it's another example of his commitment to sonic detail. That said, the differences between this version and the original rock version are subtle, with some guitar and minor sonic touches having been added. Still, this rocks pretty great. The uncensored version has never received an official release while the Clean Edit appears on Spin and Cornerstone compilations. Massive thanks to Josh and bgpu for sharing their lossless copies of these tracks with me so I can feature them here. I owe you guys!

UPDATE: I got a report that the clean version of Lapdance isn't unzipping correctly so you can get that file here, although all the archives have recovery records included which can be used in WinRAR.

29 Peter Gabriel - Growing Up (Trent Reznor Remix)
This is such a beauty, with Trent adding new keys, guitars and all kinds of little touches. Simply striking!

30 U2 - Vertigo (Trent Reznor Remix)
Easily my least favorite track Trent had anything to do with, this sounds more like a job or a favor for a labelmate. Regardless, the crew is out in full force as Keith Hillebrandt handles programming with Leo Herrera, James Brown, Brett Bachemin and Dustin Mosley handling the engineering.
